    IBM Active Protection

I just picked up this T41 IBM thinkpad. Very, very nice.
It came with the Active Protection System for the harddrive - has anyone else used this yet? I think it still has a long way to go. There is a setting in the control panel where you can select for it to ignore smaller frequent shocks like travelling in a car or train, but it still seems to be kicking on an awful lot unless I'm sitting at the desk.

I was pretty excited about this feature, and yes we got this one sort of as a "test machine" to see if this was going to be the selling point for going with all IBM's in the future, but unless I'm missing something, this APS may not be the deciding factor.

    OK, you asked for it
The T41 is a great laptop. The Protection System is just one of the Thinkvantage technologies that will make computing much easier for you guys. I'd say try out the Protection System for a few days, and see how it goes. In the worst case, you can always disable it.

There, thats my sales pitch. I'm finished

No no, I agree the T41 rocks!
I was just wondering what the deal was with the APS settings - if I have this thing on my lap (you know it IS a laptop after all!) the drive keeps going on and off with every small move I make, even with the setting to "ignore frequent shocks" enabled. When it does this, obviously the idea of a harddrive starting and stopping and starting and stopping and starting again - well, it makes it a little difficult to use, especially under battery power it can get kinda "jerky". Even if I'm not necessarily accessing data the power required to continually start and stop a harddrive from spinning is enough to cause noticable slowdowns.

Yeah, I see what you are saying. I would give tech support a call and see if its a normal thing. I heard that its supposed to learn your movements, and after a while its gets accustomed to how you move and will stop bothering you, but I am not sure if thats true.
