Probably a number of ways. What Operating system are you using & what are the general system specs?

Clicvk Start --> Run --> type MSCONFIG --> click OK click Startup tab (top right corner) remove check marks according to what is necessary. Use this site for reference to determine what is required according to your system.

With win98 you can get some of that 128Megs back. Go here first..

    http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html

And follow the instructions to find out what programs you have starting up when you boot your PC. Odds are there are a few that don't need to be there. Depending on what's there you can pare off 5 to 20 megs right off the top.

EDIT-- darn these slow fingers.. both sites are good and might have something the other doesn't.

EDIT2- also worth mentioning... system resources aren't a measure of memory. 84% is good anyway so don't expect that to change much if at all after you've stopped programs from loading. Use Taskmanager to view memory usage.( rt. click the taskbar & select task manager)

Are you confusing memory with hard drive usage? Open windows explorer (file explorer) and right click your C drive and select properties. What are the stats for used vs unused space? (how large is the drive?)

The message i get when i try to defrag or scan disk is:

Scandisk could not continue because your computer does not have enough available memory. If any other programs are running, quit one or more of them, and try running scandisk again.

Boot to DOS and type scandisk /autofix from the C prompt. Then boot to either safe mode and run Defrag.

Try using this substitute Windows (ME) defrag program. It's much better.

No there isn't a program that will do that. We have to find out why you're getting those error messages and fix the problem.

Are you saying that you downloaded that little defrag program and when you tried to open it or install it you got the same low memory message?

If you just did a clean install of Windows the other day as you say (and having only approx 500megs of used space on the drive confirms it's a new(ish) installation) then you should't be having memory issues.

Look again in Windows Explorer and see if you have two Windows directories. I'm wondering if you accidentally did a side by side install of Windows rather than over the top.

The error is caused because the Cluster size on your partition is invalid in relation to the size of the partition.

Did you just install a new drive?? And, use a ghost-like utility to copy the files over from the old one?

Your options are to use Partition Magic to resize the clusters, or to tear down and rebuild/reload the partition.
