Ok yes that was ok putting it in this thread. I'm not a hijackthis guru but one obvious entry needs fixing. Open Hijackthis and scan again. Put a check in this one and tell it to fix it:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {09F0F280-FB9A-481B-B69A-CB00DC44D027} - (no file)

I see nothing else untoward or bad in your log, but I believe the above might be why you're getting the IE close problems.

It's still doing the same thing but guess I can live with it, it only blinks (or whatever it's doing) for a fraction of a second and it's just a few of them.

I did find out one thing, my home page was blinking twice and I disabled all my ad blockers and that was causing one of them, taking out the ad and filling the space it left. That's isn't the main thing that's happening now for it's different than it was before.

I sure thank you for your time and patience.

Did you do the sfc scannow that I suggested in a previous post? If there are corrupt files on your computer this should fix them and may allow you to reinstall the original driver. Other than that, this may be a time to do an over the top reinstall of xp. Try the sfc first though.

Yes, I did the sfc. I'll try reinstalling the driver again.

What is a over the top reinstall? Do you have to download sp1 and all the updates after?

Let's try a repair install before the over the top install. Go here and scroll down to "How to run a repair install"

    http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

Following the instructions you would go past the screen first two options by hitting "Enter". Do not use the repair option on the first screen, that uses the "Recovery option" which you don't want to do. At the next window you'll see the option to run a repair install. This is graphical so you need to print out the instructions.

When you get through the instructions given by photolady. Before you install video drivers again,I would suggest you run driver cleaner to get rid of any leftovers that may cause problems: http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/

You install it in regular mode, but run it in safe mode after removing drivers in normal way from add-remove. It works for both ATI 'and' Nvidia drivers. This way you start with a clean slate...
    Stupid question? No such thing!

To make a long story short, I tried to install from a ghost image, one of the cd's had a bad place and wouldn't take.

The repair install wouldn't go all the way because of a missing file.

The complete reinstall wouldn't work because of a missing file.

I finally formatted thru safe mode and somehow got windows to install.

Now, in device manager I have a question mark on sm bus controller. The computer can't find it on any cd's I have or the internet to install it.

    Where do I find it?

Thanks for all the time and trouble.

That controller should be on your disks you got from Dell, should look under system utilities. Or you can go to Dell's website and click on support/downloads and input your system in the boxes provided, ie, dimension and 4500, this will bring up all downloads, and you scroll the available downloads. You're looking for "Chipset" and "Intel Chipset Softare Installation Utility"

Got it from Dell, looked before but couldn't find it(didn't know exactly what I was looking for).

I just can't express my appreciation for all you've done for me, so I'll just say thanks again.

You're quite welcome Jim. I was glad to help. "I love a happy ending"
