A7N8X-X A Friends Comp
Hi Peeps, it's me again, but enquireing for a friend....
He has an ASUS A7N8X-X with a 1 stick of DDR400 512Mbt PC3200
n a XP2600+Barton processor....Bios is UpToDate....
In Bios it says this---External 133Mhz-- Maximum Clock 2250Mhz--
CURRENT Clock 1533Mhz Voltage 1.6v.....
How do we get his XP2600=Barton to run at its Max ie proper speed without Overclocking.......Has he gota change something on the board first...Or just change that 133 to a 166...
CPU frequency Multiplyer 11.5x
CPU Ext Frequ (mhz) (133/33
CP v Core 1.650v
SDRam= 3.0T

Thats Rubbish in my Book or am I wrong......We did do some changes but it just kept Bleeping n Not Post.....All back as above
Anyone with a Good knowledge of what he should set in Bios will be Graetfully Recieved n Appreciated.......THANKS

As a side issue... Those memory timings (3-4-4-10) your friend has there (though they may be, and probably are, the default for that particular stick of ram) are fairly poor. I think he might see a decent performance boost if he ran that PC3200 memory at 166 (333 ddr) mhz (instead of its default 200, 400ddr) to have it run in sync with the processor's bus speed, and then tried to reduce (improve) the timings to (say) 2.5-3-3-8.
Just something maybe worth trying.

DRMDJ- can u please tell me which is faster setting mine or yours with the 8 at end.......his processor is now running at 1.916Mhz
But i thought it should go at 2.08Ghz.....
this board does not have the cpu fsb jump settings in it...it's jumper free..So is that the highest it will go.
THANKS...

1.97MHZ at standard settings [or there abouts] this processor core/speed is well up for overclocking provided you watch the temps you should be able to get it equivalent to 3200+ tweaking the bios under expert mode and bringing the motherboard frequency up a few notches with no problem.

The settings they set for the memory are fine. They are ever so slightly more aggressive than what I had suggested (not knowing what your friend's particular ram could tolerate), but will pretty much produce the same performace. Definately a lot better than what was set earlier.
By he way, re 104456's comments... Just so ya kow, the "3200+" he refers to runs at 2200mhz (2.2ghz). And I second the idea that your friends computer could likel be overclocked by that much if he wanted. But as 104456 said, mind the cooling. Now if he does do this he would want to readjust those memory timings again. He'd want to set the memory bus speed back to 200 (400ddr) and at least initially go with those earlier default timing settings of 3-4-4-10 (though they likely could be improved).
Then again, your friend may not want to bother with overclocking (understandable).

Once Again, THANKS for the Help....Wish I was as clude-up as you lot.....He Does NOT Like to Overclock but does like his components in comp to Run as they r supposed to do...
It was me that was wondering about that processor...Seeing as its a 2600 I thought it would/should run at 2.08Ghz without overclocking......But he seems Happy now at 1.92Ghz...
Tell U what Baffles Me!....Model 10 (Barton) 512KB L2-cache @ 166FSB runs @ 1.92Ghz (166x11.5)
& YET--A Model 8 Thoroughbred 256KB L2-cache, 166FSB runs @ 2.08Ghz (166x12.5) <<Why is this un faster!!?
His Memory is Kingston PC3200 512mb DDR400.....so i take it that this is running as a DDR333 with those settings he's got....or am i getting myself all mixed up!!..
if that is correct---then i'm going to get the pc2700 512mb DDR333 as the guy in the shop has recomended...
Once again, THANKS, n Take Care.....Dennis..
PS--This is what I've decided to go for----
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe Skt A
Kingston DDr333 512MB PC2700 CL2.5 memory
AMD Retail XP 2600+ (2.083 Ghz) 333FSB

LiteOn DVD Rom 166S
Maxtor 120Gbt Hard Disk...Not sure to get an IDE or SATTA one!!?
English Rip Off Price in Local shop with VAT is £381.98p
Then theres the Tower/PSU @ £50 n Q-Tec AMD Heatsink & Fan ' £8...Shop will fit that n Processor on the Board for me for free...
