Do you really need to update anti-virus defs?
Just bought a new computer. It had Norton pre-installed. It also has an original image that can quickly restore the computer to its "new" configuration.
Before I trust such a feature, I try it out. Just for fun, I did not update the av signature file. As far as I could tell, it was nearly a year out of date.
I went surfing for about a half hour. I did not open any email or (intentionally) download any files. I just surfed the net using IE. I did visit a music download site and a warz site as well as a cross section of sites I would exptect to be safe.
In 30 minutes I contracted 4 viruses and 3 Trojans, one of which keeps advertising an anti-virus.
Fortunately, the restore worked perfectly.

You will have to stay off those less salubrious sites Jerryx I take it you had no firewall, cookie cleaner or pop up stopper installed either?
Now as a further experiment go and stand in the road and see if the traffic stops for you [j/k]

Definitely shows the need for updating all your protective gear.
Experimenting is fine if one knows what to do to return to normal.
My uncle experimented eating dog food. Alas, he died.
He was crossing the street, stopped to lick his butt and a car ran over him.
Beware of experiments.
