Q about DVD dual layer and multichannel

Couple questions for you guys that know about this. (I havent got into DVD burning yet)
When dual layer DVD media hits will the existing DVD burners be able to burn both layers or will a "new" burner be required?
Also, can I use existing hard/software to burn 5.1 channels (DD or DTS)?

Trying to find out where things are now and if I might need to wait a little.
Thanks so much for any input.

With very few exceptions (a couple manufacturers claim they will provide firmware upgrades in the case of a couple of their burners) current single-layer capable dvd burners will not be able to burn dual-layer discs or be convertable to do so.

As long as the original sound source is in 5.1 (or other) format then it can be burned as such.

If you are interested in dual-layer dvd then you should wait a while. There is still some ironing out of things that needs to be done.
Please remember to post back whether your problem is resolved or
not, so that others may gain from the knowledge.

Thanks for the info. I had doubts about multi-layer w/ current burners. I also had read that no "stand alone" home unit would burn in 5.1.
I will take your advice and hold off for a time and see what comes out and when.
Thanks again for stopping by with the help.
