It's great that he was able to create the program and keep up with it like he has.

But, life goes on.

Maybe someone will be able to find the time to keep up with it or maybe improve on it or something.

I wish him all the luck. There are still manual fixes, according to the mods at spywareinfo, and one has a tool for one variant, about:Buster, I believe, that he's still working on. It's available, but he keeps working with it....you know what I mean.

That really is too bad. We will lose a great tool in the fight against malware.
All the work Merijn has done is greatly appreciated. I wish him well in his studies, and hope he will be able to continue work on CWS soon.

CWshedder has become a very popular tool in the fight against malware. He could start charging a small amount of money for it and become a wealthy man in a few years. Heck-I'd pay for it.

To loose CWshedder is such a blow in the fight against malware.

I had held off switching away from IE at our office because of the feedback I was going to get from users who didn't want something new. But the news of CW Shredder's fate finally sealed IE's fate.

I've set IE to the highest security level (so surfing with it is nearly impossible) and I've switched every PC to Mozilla or Firefox. I'm sure there will be some bumps in the surfing road ahead but the risk of problems has just grown too large...

This will be the last update to CWShredder for awhile, for three reasons.

One: I've finished my Chemistry study at university, and I'm starting a
second one in September, in the Computer Science field. I want to take all the
time I can for this in order to do it right.

Two: The more recent 'CWS' variants (most link to umaxsearch.com now) use
techniques to hide and run that I cannot repair with a program written in VB. I've
been stretching what I can do with VB for a long time, but I'm at the limit now. All the
variants that use resident DLLs loading from hidden spots can't be removed, neither
can the trojans using HackerDefender to protect themselves. KillBox and PrcView
seem to be excellent tools for removing resident DLLs from memory, DG is working on a
fix for HxDef that goes far beyond my comprehension, and then there's
Shadowwar, Mosaic1 and freeatlast who are both better up to date with the situation as well
as better at fixing these variants than me.

Three: I really, really need a break. I have over 2500 emails waiting and
going on a nervous breakdown if I keep this up. Heck, deleting all the spam/email viruses
from MailWasher each day is starting to take longer than answering my
daily emails did when I just got recruited by SpywareInfo.
I've been hearing friendly words that I deserve each break I took
recently, but I disagree somewhat - I have been slacking off and losing track of all the
new developments in browser hijacking hell. It's somewhat depressing to keep
fighting these things every day while they still keep coming in larger and larger
volumes.
I never expected to get depressed from this kind of stuff, but here I am.
When things pick up, maybe I'll continue development of CWShredder, but for now
it's on hiatus.

HijackThis 1.98 will be out this week or so when my Japanese beta tester
confirms the last bug has been fixed and I hope it is useful to you all. I
updated
the 'Misc Tools' section with a few things that should really help.Unquote

What's going to happen if we loose the war against malware. People are becoming so discouraged they are giving up using(or buying) computers. We need a concentrated effort by large corporations, with the resources to develop software, that can successfully protect computers against all forms of malware. Will it happen? It better or the internet as we know it will vanish.

Most if not all of these malware invasions is brought into our computers by using Internet Explorer. Don't get mad at I.E. get Mozilla's Firefox browser. It's much more secure than I.E. and by design won't download spyware/malware or virus's on your computer.

re: my post above concerning changing to Firefox from IE...

The only issue so far has been McAfee v8 Anti-Virus. It requires ActiveX to run basic functions like updates and manual scanning. So, the 2 PCs that had v8 on them had their antivirus packages replaced with 2 other brands.

And things are working fine again...
