    Unable to Defrag

For several months now, a friend has been unable to defrag her 'C' drive (she has two drive C & D)

Whenever she tries to defrag, she gets this message (see pic)
As far as she knows, she hasn't scheduled Chkdsk to run at any time.
How can she 'deschedule ChkDsk so's she can do a defrag?!!

First of all go to the Command Prompt (Programs>Accessories), and type "chkdsk /r" without the quotes then restart the computer. Hopefully that'll force chkdsk to run and sort things out. If that doesn't work then try "chkntfs /d", which should reset the default behaviour.

If that still doesn't work then the last resort is "chkntfs C: /x". That should force it to not run.

Thanks SuperSparks, I'll get her to try those and see what happens.

Well, she tried those entries, but apparently it still will not defrag.
She also attempted to defrag from 'Safe mode' but got a message to the affect that 'unable to defrag as computer already working', even though she didn't have anything running that she was aware of.

She did a search for CHKDSK.EXE, and came up with these lo cations. (see attached pic)
I know a couple of them should be there, but what's the "Portent.TST" thing? Is that any clue to the problem?

There is a load testing software called Portent Supreme. Did this machine have any such software installed on it in the past. You can find more information for this software from Portant Supreme .

I really dont know much more about the above software though.

Hi Code Warrior, thanks for the link - I've just found out that she'd bought the pc of someone called 'Portent Technologies' so that may have been some test file they ran at some time.
Still no luck with the defrag though!

OK, try booting up with the Win2000 CD in the drive, and at the Command Prompt, type chkdsk /r there. That'll run chkdsk for sure, and hopefully it'll reset itself after it's done and allow defrag to run.
