Check disk stopped running after improper shut down.

Check disk stop running after improper shut downs. I can run it manually. But lets say I am on my desktop then I hit the reset button on my tower. It will boot normally as if I reset it by Windows. Not really a problem since I can do it manually but what would cause it to do that?

Haha, That figures. I always make sure to shut down properly. We had a black outs the other day. Ever since then hasn't ran automaticly. Only reason I know becuase we had 4 black outs in one day. I need to get my UPS. We had some bad storms come our way last week. Not worried about it, since I can run it manualy. I think that is the only thing that was messed up by the improper shut down. Check disk didn't find any errors. I guess worse could of happened.

One step ahead of ya It was the first thing I did after all the storms passed. What is the command line to do a full check disk? I will do this while I am asleep tonight. I know it is scandisk/all in 9x but is it still the same since it is called check disk now?

"chkdsk /r " without the quotes, is the most thorough option. Chkdsk is a bit more intelligent than the old Win98 Scandisk, and it doesn't always run after a bad shutdown - it'll only run if it thinks there might be a problem. It sounds to me as if the bad shutdowns haven't done any harm.

But I'd definitely get that UPS - I once got a wrecked hard drive after a power failure. That has made me a fanatical supporter of UPS's

    Hi!

I think this answers the question you were asking:

To get the PC to automatically run Chkdsk after a bad shutdown (when necessary), type the following from a Windows' command prompt:
    chkntfs /d

"Restores the machine to the default behavior; all drives are checked at boot time and chkdsk is run on those that are dirty."

    Best wishes,

    Andrew

actually chk disk is a very old dos program. It isn't really all that great.

In 9x we had scandisk which was more up to date. In XP we have errror checking.

To Run Error checking double click on my computer icon> Right click on the drive> Click on properties> click on the tools tab> Click on check now under error checking!
If it ain't broke, you arn't trying hard enough!!

Er, well actually the chkdsk in Win2000/XP isn't the DOS program, there is no DOS. And the error checking in XP (it's also in Win2000) is just a different way of starting chkdsk - but you still end up running the same thing.
