Win XP Pro SP1 install problem

Every time I try to install XP Pro SP1 I get a illegal action notice. I have tried everything that I can think of and nothing works. Any ideas. Running Win 98SE

First thing I have to ask is, are you trying to install SP1 into win98? If so it won't work as SP1 was designed for XP.

If you are trying to install XP, most copies in the stores today have SP1 included, so you would be installing XP with the SP1.

Give us a little more information about what you are trying to do, and we will come up with an answer for you.

If you are trying to install XP Pro with SP1 included, why not boot off of the CD, instead of trying to install it inside of windows?

I meant that the program has SP1 included. My last attempt, I tried to install in safe mode it started to install then I got this message:

FATAL ERROR Setup cannot continue. Contact microsoft technical support(error 5dff58h).

How do I boot from the disk

If you got your cd in a retail box, booting from the cd should be as easy as putting the cd in and starting the computer. If your cd drive does not support bootable cds, try the disks found at this link: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo..._en_pro_bf.exe

It sounds like you may have a illegal copy of xp, in which case it would not be a boot cd.

I believe your CD, being that XP is a NT based OS, doesn't like being run inside of any Windows 9x environment. Go into your BIOS, under Advanced CMOS Setting, set the CDROM as the first boot device, or first in the boot order. Put the CD in the drive and then save the Settings.
When the computer restarts, it will boot off of the CD.

I have tried everything suggested, and more, and I can not install win xp+sp1 over this win 98se os. I have helped to install many win xp systems and this is the first one that I am unable to install. There must be something installed in this particular win 98 installation that stops the installation. I am doing this for a friend and I hate to have to hang my head and say I can not do the installation. This is a big disappointment for me

If you do as suggested and go into the bios and set the computer to boot from the cdrom drive then put the xp cd in and restart the computer it should start the setup.......You may also want to check the computer against the HAL

Again like a previous poster said, don't start 98SE, chnage your boot sequence to make the CD-Rom device you first boot option and put the CD in the tray.
If this does not work, then return the retail CD and get a refund as this copy is defective. I would not advise to install XP on the top of andy 9x based OS.

You may be missing this little message when trying to boot from the CD.
"Booting from CD" with periods appearing after the D, this is a count down.
During the time this message appears, you may need to press the Enter key to boot off of the CD, else it goes straight to the hard drive and boots from there.
BTW, when XP is doing the install, and it reboots, do not press the Enter key, let it go to the hard drive.

I gave it one more try. I got it to boot from the CD and it still failed to install, keeps coming up with illegal notices etc. There has to be something other very seriously wrong. I'm done trying... Thanks all for the suggestions
