Hi Paganiniest, welcome to Virtual Dr

I've moved your post into it's own thread so that more people will see it. Have you run Spybot and Adaware? If not, do that first, and then repost the Hijack This log here.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - You have 2 of these. I don't trust any BHO that has no name. I just came in on this, so I'm not up to speed. I take it you did a registry clean. I did see you have highjackthis. Do you have Spybot search & destroy? Or Spyware Guard? There are a couple more good ones, Spyware Blaster and Browser highjack Blaster. Find out what the two BHOs are. They both have 02 before them. thundermoon P.S. You can go to http://www.wilders.org and get most any security programs you may need. Most are free.

Hi. Close all (browser) windows & have HJT fix these entries by placing a check in the appropriate box=

    R3 - URLSearchHook: iSearch Toolbar - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\TOOLBAR.DLL (file missing)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADOBE\ACROBAT 5.0\READER\ACTIVEX\ACROIEHELPER.OCX (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\TOOLBAR.DLL (file missing)

    O3 - Toolbar: iSearch Toolbar - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\TOOLBAR.DLL (file missing)

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &iSearch The Web - res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\TOOLBAR.DLL/SEARCH.HTML

Can you let me know what this is please??
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CPQ BackWeb Monitor] C:\CPQS\TOOLS\BackMon.exe

Also the "no name" at the start of the BHO doesn't mean anything, it is the numbers within the brackets where the main info lies. Adobe acrobat has 'no name' at the start too, as do a lot of other good BHO's.

    Crunchie,

You deserve a Gpld Medal for computer Guru. Isearch is all gone including the grayed out tool bar option. Thank you THANK YOU!!!

In reply to your question this is the info I got from HJT.

    04 – HKLM\.. Run: {CPQ Back Web Monitor} C:\CPQS\TOOLS\BackMon.exe
    Detailed information on item 04:

This part of the scan checks for several suspicious entries that autoload when Windows starts. Autoloading entries can load a Registry script, VB script or JavaScript file, possibly causing the IE start page, Search Page, Search Bar and Search Assistant to revert back to a hijacker’s page after a system reboot. Also, a DLL file can be loaded that can hook into several parts of your system.

    Infected examples:

    Regedit c:\windows\system\sp.tmp /s
    KERNEL32.VBS
    C:\windows\temp\install.js
    Rundll32C:\Program Files\NewDotNet\newdotnet4_5.dll,NewDotNetStartup

Hi again. The file that I questioned you need to navigate to it yourself by going to 'C' the folder called 'CPQS' subfolder 'TOOLS' then right click on this file : 'BackMon.exe' , left click on properties & get whatever information is available there.

    Thanx.

Thanx for that. I would say that because of the length of time it has been on your computer that it is a legitimate file, so we'll leave it there I think.
Does it, or the folder it is in give any indication of what it is/does??

this board says it's a pest. Gives instructions for removal.

Other google searches say it's part of compaq's customer service pack.

I must have a different google , I get only one eturn for the original file.
The one you showed from cexx is this one C:\CPQS\TOOLS\BackMon2.exe & has a 2 in the name. This file was deleted with no explanation either.
It well may be a baddy, so it might be worth changing the file name & see how the computer goes for a while.
