Security Update (KB832894) causing grief

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894) is causing me a problem and in the past I've left this one out because of this, read on.

After the load when I do a right mouse click on Start and select Explorer, then a left click on My Documents, or My Network Places or My Computer it doesn’t take me there but just turns green from blue. If I do a restore back before the patch it’s ok. Anyone have a fix for this? I really need to keep this patch on.

I'd just restore bsack to the point before the patch and look into the matter further. Like doing a on-line virus scan, etc. See the below links in my signature area to scan online and get Ad-aware, update and run it.

Get, install, update and run free Ad-aware (and its HexDump plug-in) from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest referencefiles.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use Custom Scanning Options' then click Customize' and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan Within Archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select: Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select: Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Restart your computer.

Thx for the info. I did run Adaware but will rerun with your specified settings. I also ran Spybot, CWShredder, HijackThis and have Spyblaster installed. I'll let you know if the links work or not.

What's with Panda lately, it runs forever, last time I tried to run it it was still running after 8 hrs. I think it a piece of crap, unless I'm doing something wrong.

COPO--FWIW there is a fix for the 832894 patch. See

You will be referred to 831167. I cannot promise that the problem you mention will be fixed (it is not mentioned), but stranger things have happened with MS' fixes for fixes.
Also, the problem you are describing could suggest that the Shortcuts (for My Documents, etc.) you have in Start|Explore (after installing 832894) are no longer working. You might try to replace them with new shortcuts that you have tested and do work.

The scans listed above did not resolve the problem.

The problem is not with shortcuts in the start list, it's the blue links in the middle of the page when I go to windows explore. They just turn green and they don't take me there.

I can't get this to turn into a thumbnail to blowup but it's the blue links in the middle of the screen that are not working.

The Windows update was on my check for updates and I downloaded it but still have the problem.

Well I restored back before the patch, removed msn messenger, morpheus, webferret and ran all the virus/hijacker software and then created a check pt and loaded the KB832894 update, rebooted and still have the problem, then ran the newest KB831167 update and rebooted and it did not solve it either.

So what's up?

The problem seem to be View as Webpage function of Windows Explorer. There is a hidden file that controls this, named Folder.Htt, it seems to be corrupt.
However, replacing this file is not simple, there are quite a few, in different locations. The ones in C:\Windows\System, C:\Windows, C:\Windows\System32, C:\Program Files are folder specific. The one in C:\Windows\Web covers the rest of the folders, ie C:\Program Files\AVG6.

Why would an update screw it up?

It could be this.
A vulnerability that could allow an unauthorized user to learn the location of cached content on your computer. This could enable the unauthorized user to launch compiled HTML Help (.chm) files that contain shortcuts to executable (.exe) files, allowing the unauthorized user to run the .exe files on your computer.
Hard to tell if this applies, I can't see what type of links your Windows Explorer is showing.
But remember, the update is cumulative, meaning while the current update does not mention this part being updated, it does include previous updates.

Do you know whether the Windows update changes anything in the registry?
What I was thinking of doing is:
1. Run System Restore back to before I loaded the Updates.
2. Run scanreg to backup the registry.
3. Do the Window Updates.
4. Replace the registry with the backup copy before the updates.

Are there many registry backups to choose from and are they date and time stamped?

Yes, it does do changes to the registry. The version numbers of the system files are kept track in there, so an newer version of a system file does not get replaced by an earlier version when installing or updating.
In others words, backing up the registry, doing the updates, then restoring an earlier registry will not have any info about the recent update.
I think it is some file that is in the update that is doing this to you.
Perhaps not using View as Webpage?
