Server software problems and solutions.
I have begged for this before. Currently there are nearly 100,000 posts in the 'desktop computer hardware' group and 50,000 in the 'general software'. I would spend more time (and consequently endure more popups/unders and other adverts) if there was a place set up for SERVER RELATED SERVICE PROBLEMS (that would be SOFTWARE). It is simply not conducive to put it into General, as it gets almost immediately buried. Please, I have assisted in hundreds of threads over a couple years. WE NEED A SERVER FORUM.
OR if Internet.com has a sister site dedicated to this purpose, I would be happy to migrate there .
Pat

Hi patweb, You have touched on an important subject. Let's see about discussing this more. Servers are a very important subject. And there are more smaller servers coming into being than ever from what I have been reading. Certainly there is the hardware portion of the subject, but look at the knowledge they hold and becomes available to the user that accesses a server.
Anyone can have a server if they wish, but a server requires continual uptime for users unless a private server within a finite group of private controlled networked computers.
The server subject could be found in several of the forums due to the material found, which to me means it is important enough to have its own heading under Hardware. (Servers covers both hardware and software.) It is IMO a subject in its own right.
Three years ago or more, we had only Hardware and not much action. A very small part of Virtual Dr. Less than 300 threads and 2700 some odd posts. Today it is broken into several areas. Servers would be a good addition.
I cannot say that this change can be made as the decision and approval has to come down from higher up, but I support the idea of having Servers as a separate area of Virtual Dr.
You can be sure the other moderaters and higher ups will think about this also as they are made aware of it.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Generally, the hardware between server and workstation is similar (WINTEL platform). However, the software and server services have thier paticular problems. When they come up, it is generally critical to get a timely response with ideas. That's why I think the subject warrants it's own group. There does seem to be a lot of latitude (overlap) in the other groups that lead to confusions (such as having a general hardware, and then groups for each hardware component seems redundant to me).

The more I thought about it , I found myself leaning towards a forum for itself just because of the interaction of the servers between hardware, software, and OSs. That is what I asked the other moderators to think about and comment on. Now we wait.

Although this may be the tenth thread in which I have expressed this opinion ...
I'm less concerned with whether a machine is an actual hardware server "box" with the fancy hard drives and big giant tower. I look at it more as a difference between enterprise networks and home/small office computing.
It might cause some overlap though, with the existing Windows NT/2000 and Linux forums, and the Networking forum (threads in there are already fairly off-topic, if you strictly interpret the forum description as meaning it is for networking hardware like switches, hubs etc!) Too bad there isn't a way to manipulate the vbulletin software to allow threads to "exist" in more than one forum at a time (not copies but actual links to the same thread)
That said, I wouldn't say that this is a raging, urgent issue, but it would be nice.

WINDOWS 2000 WORKSTATION
WINDOWS 2000 SERVER
WINDOWS NT WORKSTATION
WINDOWS NT SERVER
(Hopefully not too many people are using server for thier desktop operating system).
Hardware is like you said, pretty obiquitous. However, server problems, in my opinion, are almost always URGENT .
Also, I think there is a new feature that automatically displays like threads (kind of a fuzzy search).

Hi Pat, just to let you know your request is not falling on deaf ears the mods & myself have had quite a discussion about this in our private mod forum. At the moment VDR has a sister site that deals with these issues CLICK HERE. The fact of the matter is that site has been open for awhile now & is not generating very much traffiic so that tells us that it would probably be a waste of time to open such a forum here at this point. Who knows, maybe down the road, but meanwhile check out the other site & see what you think. BJ

Wait a minute, if noone knows about the site, then of course it won't generate any traffic. What kind of advertisement are you doing for the site? I will register now.

It's not up to me or my staff to advertise that site & I dont know what Jupitermedia is doing to promote it either but im sure that posting links here & word of mouth will help jump start it. Will see about putting a link on our main forums index page. BJ

Darn it, only one post there in 24 hours. It may be a lost cause. How about integrating the two sites? Does someone have the power of suggestion with Internet.com?

Hi patweb, About four years ago the Hardware Forum was in worse shape than than ServerWatch was. Some of us wanted to try something and we were put into hardware to try it. The rest is history.
There is now a link to that site in Hardware. Now your mission, should you choose to accept it (who said that? LOL), would be to gather up a few people who are interested/have servers and start talkin' over there. You already have a big advantage in that there is a link on VirDr which as BJ said would start to corral traffic. Which means there has to be activity over there. It is a sister site that needs help and is basically setup for servers.
One thing I did not realize when I first answered your post was just how big and all encompassing servers are.
You can start to see what there is to deal with here. How many people can discuss all this and more off the top of their heads. I am currently working with Apache - trying to learn a bit about it as one of the servers I use has it and more.
What we have to be careful with on VirDr is to keep it in control. I gave up some time ago tryin to keep up daily with all the forums we have. Now if we put in servers - how many of our forums woul not be touched by servers?
But with the link BJ put in hardware, any member can go to a site where everything talked about comes from the perspective of servers. And with that gate for servers in hardware, ServerWatch just got some powerful help to my way of thinking.
Now the question is are there willing people to help make that site better which will add members and quickly as word gets around answers can be found on ServerWatch.
Type in servers in Google and you come up with 23,500,000 webpages. Lot of pages for the subject - Servers.

Should SERVERWATCH fold, I would be happy to donate my time moderating a server group here. Type in PC HELP, you get a million and one hits. I have some loyalty to VirtualDr, having been around about 3 years. What I was hoping for was to make this site more useful to guys like me. That should be INTERNET.COM's goal (keeping people coming back), not mine.
This site works because it has a huge base of ingenuity and downright genius personalities. That's what makes VirtualDR great.
I will do my best to keep SERVERWATCH alive, but I guess if it has to be GOOGLE, google it will be.
Have a nice weekend.
