speak.exe with windows 95 toshiba T2400ct Laptop
I have a toshiba t2400ct laptop and I have not been able to find a sound card for it yet so I want to use the speak.exe for sound until I can find a sound card for it ....how do I go about using speak.exe with win95...I used it about 6 years ago with a win3.1 machine...is this still possible?

Yes it is
However you might not like the results. It plays wav files only & that not very well. On some systems it degrades performance while the wav's are playing. Try it & see. Might work for you, might not

SUMMARY
Speak.exe contains a Microsoft Windows sound driver that allows most .wav files to be played on the PC speaker on most computers not equipped with a sound card. This article describes how to obtain, install, and use the PC speaker driver with Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me.

NOTE: The PC speaker driver may not produce high-quality sound on all computer systems. The performance of the PC speaker driver is largely dependent upon the hardware itself. Microsoft does not guarantee that the speaker driver will work with all computer systems. Although Microsoft may assist in the installation of the PC speaker driver, its functionality is not supported.
To Download the PC Speaker Driver
Download the Speak.exe file to an empty folder, and then double-click the Speak.exe file to extract its contents.

Microsoft used the most current virus detection software available on the date of posting to scan this file for viruses. Once posted, the file is housed on secure servers that prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
To Install the PC Speaker Driver
To install the PC Speaker Driver, use the appropriate method:
Windows 95:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Add New Hardware.
Click Next, click No, and then click Next.
In the Hardware Types box, click Sound, Video, And Game Controllers, and then click Next.
Click Have Disk.
In the Copy Manufacturer's Files From box, enter the full path for the folder containing the Speak.exe file and its contents. Click OK.
Click Sound Driver For PC Speaker, and then click OK.
Click Finish.
When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.
Windows 98:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Add New Hardware.
Click Next, click Next, click No, click Next, click No, and then click Next.
In the Hardware Types box, click Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, and then click Next.
Click Have Disk.

Notes
The PC speaker driver plays only .wav files. It does not play .mid, .rmi, or .avi files.
The version of Media Player included with Windows does not play .wav files with the PC speaker driver. To play .wav files, use Sound Recorder.
Windows includes default codecs. Other multimedia programs may install proprietary or additional codecs that do not function with the PC speaker driver.
The built-in Windows Volume and Mixer tools will not control the PC speaker driver.

I followed these steps exactly and when I go to configure the pc speaker it never gives me the test feature it is greyed out....and I cannot play any .wav files....real puzzling so far....I dont remember this being that difficult in windows 3.1....I guess it could be possible that there is no real speaker inside this laptop...I do hear beeps when it boots but that could be from the bios instead of the speaker correct?

No, if it beeps when it posts you have a speaker. If you get the driver to work you really wont be happy with the quality of it.
I recently installed it on a desktop for kids in a day care. Ended up taking it off, which wasnt easy, because it sounded terrible

I got it working...it is not the best but I am looking for the sound card for this machine...It will probably be very hard to find but who knows....for now I have a 486 laptop that did not cost anything.....so I am happy as a clam for now
