    WMP needs new decompressor

    Hi,
I clicked on a .wmv link and WMP opened and I got this message: "your security settings do not allow the new decompression to be installed. (Set browser security settings to medium or lower) Also Error #80040200.
I'm a bit reluctant to change my security settings - will it give me a different version of WMP if I do?
    I have WMP 6.4.07.1124, Direct X 8.0b with the patch, Windows 98se and IE6sp1.
Is there any other way for me to get the decompressor I need, and, if so, how do I install it?
    Thanks for any help.
    Sincerely, Nancee

P.S. I did see a link Ridge posted from MS with Media Players and codecs but I wanted to be sure if I should use that and how.

Installing a new codec will not give you a different version of WMP.

    Nanceel0:
I also use the 6.4 version as my preferred player but I also have version 7.1 sitting in the same WMP folder. Tonight 6.4 simply refused to work because of error 80040216; I don't recall the verbiage. I opened 6.4 and removed all of the format check marks and then opened 7.1 and put in the check mark by each of the formats. I think this effectively made 7.1 the default MP. I am now listening to streaming music without a hitch. Try the 7.1 and tread lightly when choosing what you want to allow to operate. (The same Ridgerunr posted some "how toos" and perhaps I can find them if you want to use them.

As buf suggests on using WMP 7.1. But you will need decent codecs to go along with it. Go into it's 'tools' options and check the tabs carefully for 'call home' junk such as DRM(digital rights management) and uncheck all that applies. Set the 'file types' to 'all'. Get the main codec pack from M$ here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ad/default.asp
top dropdown menu,'Codecs installation packages' is what you want. Says somewhere for WMP9,but works fine on versions back to 7.
Might also want to get Nimo's codec package. Just don't get one other than: http://www.soft32.com/download_2354.html
Says beta, but it's ok. I've been using it on XP-home since i installed it and Win98SE before that with no problems. There is a newer release out,but it contains ad/spyware i'm told. This one is clean...
    Stupid question? No such thing!

Just follow RR's advice. Works like a charm!! (I have his advice saved somewhere in this box.)
I had to do a scanreg /restore just now because of another problem--unrelated-- and went back 2 days. Just for the heck of it, I then tried version 6.4 and am now listening to that same nice radio station in Cedar Rapids--KMRY. Great music! You might want to do the scanreg /restore in DOS, of course, and go back to 6.4
Good luck to you.(I seem to be a die hard user of 6.4 )

Thanks everyone for your replies. Before reading the advice about 7.1 I had downloaded the WMV9 codecs for version 6.4. When I tried to install it, it asked where to put it and showed C\Program Files\WMV_9VCM - I didn't know if it should go there or if I should browse to C\Program Files\Windows Media Player, so I canceled the install and decided to lower my settings in IE and I let WMP install the codecs. It all worked out well and I was able to view the file.
Ridge - thanks for your advice about WMP 7.1 - I'll copy it in case I ever decide to install it.
Buf, I'm glad 6.4 is working for you again.
    Sincerely, Nancee

I think you should have allowed the codec to install in:
    C\Program Files\Windows Media Player
I am not sure which version of WMP you are now using--6.4 if that is your wish and preference.

    Hi buf,
I'm using version 6.4. I thought the codecs should go into C\Program Files\Windows Media Player too but I thought the installation file would have found/known that. Since it didn't I just canceled the install. All's well since I have my codecs.

Am happy for you. I too am using 6.4 without any problem. Did you try that KMRY radio station? Not knowing your musical likes/dislikes, you may not like the "oldies" and/or nostalgia. Hope the late winter snow storm isn't affecting your life style.

Thanks buf. To be honest, I've never listened to the radio in Media Player. I just clicked on radio but didn't have scripting enabed, so I didn't get anywhere.

I will, many times, listen to music while I surf, read newspapers, mail; etc. If you like music then maybe you will want to pursue using WMP for that reason. It isn't difficult to do(well my approach is, if I can do it anyone can do it). Try it, you might like it.
