CD rom Drives-Both Dissapeared
I ran Nortons Anti-virus scan, nothing found. Later restarted and tried to play a CD rom and nothing happened.
Went to control panel and neither CD rom drive or CD RW drive is showing.
Anyone have an idea what happened to them and how to get them back? Restarting does not recognize them. thanks, Joe

Hm, are either of the devices being detected by the BIOS at bootup? I think answering this might help thin out the possibilities.

Go in to DEVICE MANAGER
In device manager, what error code is showing on those two drives?
There is a few reasons that this occurs on systems and depending on the error.. There is a couple of ways to fix it. The fix has to do with regedit, search for a key in LOCAL_MACHINE and deleting an High & Low filter. But for the life of me I can't remember where I put the key number DOH!
Do a search for the error code your showing with those two drives and "missing", you'll find it.
I have to file that... Thanks for posting that filter mod ~!

Error Code is: 31. "this device is not working properly because windows canot load the drivers required forthis device.
I removed both from device manager and restarted. Windows shows them in POST, and not in My computer when started up.
windows did recognize them at start up and said it loaded the drivers.
Still did not show in Device manager. I went to "update drivers" and searched the INF files and win said the properdrivers are already loaded. I went to windows update and it found the proper drivers were loaded, so I opted to re-install them anyway.
still no luck, no CD rom drives show in MY computer.
went through the windows troublshooter, and it told me to do everything I already did.

Here's the registry fix Atmelflash was talking about.
-Run regedt32.exe from the cmd screen.
-Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D365-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
-Delete the Lowerfilters and Upperfilters lines from the right hand screen.
-Reboot.
Make sure you create a backup of your registry before you try anything like that. Better safe than sorry!
Hope that works!

CD rom Drives-Both Dissapeared
Mr. Clean, Thanks for the info... I too had the same problem, with my drives disappearing. I did what you said and deleted the filters in the registry and my drives came back.
But just after two new boot ups, the drives are gone again. I am not sure if this has anything to do with it or not, but I got a DVD from Six Flags Magic mountain of a recent ride I was on. When I insert the DVD in my dvd drive, everything comes to a halt and it seems like it is trying to load the program to view it with, but it just cannot do it. That is when all the other troubles begin. After taking the dvd back out and restarting (which takes a while because error messages come up stating there was an error loading "VideoDVD data")
Well, I am back at square one with no cd-rom drives showing in my computer. I would love some feedback on this..
