AVG not manually updating?
Win98se / IE5.5sp2
2/28 was the last update I was able to get. I now click on update and then grisoft and get to the "opening file" page but with "file size" Unknown ___ bytes received 0.
About a minute later after closing I get a connection to the internet could not be established.
So what could have happened in the past couple days. Only thing that has changed is I updated Spywareblaster.
As soon as I click update now and page changes...dead stop.
Am I alone with this? Dont see other post about not connecting so if any ideas I thank you.
Program vs...6.0.600
Virus DB...381
ps. I went and got what I thought was latest.bin file and put it in update folder and started AVG but still no update. Could have been wrong file. Not sure.
Thanks.

In a different thread I wrote:
I've tried several times today and it times out without connecting. It's happened a few times in the past before they updated their engine to allow virus updates without having to do a major download.
The last update I got (yesterday) was a big one, about 2meg I think. If lots of people are getting that one it could be causing them some bandwidth problems. Keep trying, they'll fix it eventually.

Thanks Dan, I looked for other threads before posting . Sorry I missed it.
2megs is huge and I'm on dial-up so it may be the problem, hence; connection refused. (?)
If I'm not alone, I feel better.
Thanks, will try later.

If you are using the freeware version you could quite easily get bunped off the server for the paid members.
You might find it useful to install a download manager to get the self install file this way it will continue off where it stopped.

IMO, I think that everyone is on the right track that Grisoft's having some server or bandwidth issues that are causing the pauses or slow downloads on the update link inside the free AVG.
I went to the manual file download URL http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe and downloaded the correct file for me (it was the 1st 2 Meg version) to the Update folder. This manual update download worked fine, just took a while.
But I also think that having 2 other choices within the program itself is cool too!
UPDATE!
[email protected] link! I modified my .ini file and tried the other 2 links. They literally flew! I'll keep the manual link in my back pocket but I may never need it again!

I just D/L'ed the update files and dropped them in the Grisoft update folder. Started the control center, but it would not update. I heard a few months ago they were going to faze out the free version. Maybe that's whats going on.
Got it done. I needed the big update first.

Kinda makes one wonder if there was an issue with free AVG and update #605. They picked up the incrementals again from #606 on.
It looks like to me that the only way to get 605 now (and be able to go back to incremental updates again) is to download the 2 Meg #587 to #611 file.
Since Grisoft doesn't comment on free AVG, I'm not sure if we'll ever know why this odd stuff is happening...

1st., thanks for all the input.
What I had to do...Even though I had vs. 6.0.6, I went to D/L page and manually directed the "u610j4oc.bin" to the update folder.
Restarted AVG and it installed and updated to date 3.4.04.
I then tried to connect thru auto updated and page died instantly.
Went to "ftp" site and at least got through and received, "AVG is up to date" message.
I also think the bin ID's were changed from yesterday. (?)
Thanks again especially for the link, Fuelm@n and your "How To", Han.

carson: Yeah, the .bin IDs are different because they are updating the files to the newest version. As I write this now, the latest version is #613. This morning, it was #611. Now that you are past #605 and have new auto update download URLs, you should be good to go for the incremental updates again.
