Sharing using parallel cables

I have a laptop without a cd-rom. I use parallel cables to connect it to my desk top. I am trying to use the internet on my laptop which has a modem & I've made the dial-up connector. I still can't seem to get online. Internet Explorer isn't on my laptop & I can't seem to download it to my laptop.

Am I fighting a losing battle??? Oh, I went into the properties of the shared folders & drives & made changes accordingly.

Any help you may be able to give will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your response! Now these questions may sound ignorant but I'm a novice. I've connected using my parallel cable but even after changing the properties I'm unable to download certain item. I get "access denied." When I change the share properties I even allow changes to be made.

Originally I was trying to down load things from the program file but was denied. could I just use my dial-up after getting a browser since I have a modem?

Download the IE you select to the main computer. I would put it in a folder.
Then transfer the folder to the laptop.
Install IE. When you are satified it installed correctly. Then configure your modem and you should then be able to hit the internet.

If you are refering to a installed program, then yes, you can run into all kinds of fits at times. All depends on the program whether you can run it from another computer using a shortcut. Just have to test and evaluate the outcome.

Hey everyone new to the forum, with this question I have to ask does your laptop have atleast 1 pcmcia port? if so why not use a network connection between the desktop and laptop? parallel port using the right cable at the max only transfer at 2MB/s. You could also share any internet connection from the desktop with the right software.

Thanx I would love to connect using a pcmcia port. Now, just tell me what & where it is. I believe first I'd have to reinstall windows 95 since I lost or deleted my IE. I have my original cd for windows & I have been able to access the cd drive on my desk-top. I'm afraid to delete windows & install it again. Isn't it possible that the system might crash? If I can master that then I'm on my way to getting what is needed to access the internet.

Thanx again, It will take awhile for me to get that information. Remember I'm a novice. You mean what type of laptop. It's a 486 DGI having only 16 instead of 32 (is it mega bytes). I am planning to get another or either get external memory. I just want to surf the net, I don't want anything else no games, wordprocess or anything but the internet.

I will try to get more information about the specs.
