Ram Mix question on QDI S4L-AL mb
Significant Other (herein after called the BOSS) has the above board with 256 meg PC2100 Memory. I have checked the crucial site and the memory suggestions there. I have an extra stick 256 DDR 2700 ram here and would like to install it on her mb. Crucial says that mb can have up to 2 DDR2700 or 3 PC2100. Can I then install the 2700 alongside the 2100?
I would think the 2700 would then run at the same bus speed as the 2100, but am wondering if my summation that these will work together is correct. Also, would there be any difference in which slot the 2100 or 2700 would be placed? BOSS would like her puter a little faster and this would be economically feasible use of the 2700 ram. Have never mixed and matched ram like this before, so need information. Will it work for sure? Don't really want to fry anything either - could jeopardize my situation -
All thoughts / suggestions / ideas appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to add: WinXPPro , P - 1.8
Thanks again

1st you won't fry anything, the worse that could happen is the computer will not recognize it or it won't boot. It should work as memory will always run at the slowest speed installed, in this case 266Mhx (PC2100).
I would put the PC2100 in DDR slot one and the PC2700 in Slot two. Make sure both are either ECC (Error Checking) or non-ECC, don't mix the two.

Thanks Murf for the quick reply. Installed the ram as suggested and it booted ok. When going to Hardware Manager/Device mangaer - General screen - only shows as 480 meg, not 512 as it should be. Same goes for Aida32 - shows 480, while Windows System Manager shows 512 installed. What gives here - why the difference? I have switched them from Slot 1 to Slot 2 with no difference. Would the difference have anything to do with them not being the same speed?
BOSS is happy because it works faster, so I guess one should not complain. It is just the matter of the difference / knowledge of why.
Thanks again Murf. Muchly appreciated. Always read, learn and gain assistance here, help when I can.

Anything to keep the boss happy.. I would eventually replace the PC2700 with PC2100 if you have use for the PC2700 in another computer that will run at 333MHZ.
