How do I install IE5.5 sp2?? Using a CD.
Howdy,
Decided to work on an old HP. P133, 1 GB HDD, 48MB DIMM.
Fdisked, formatted, installed win98se....installed all the drivers.
Everything worked great!
It had IE5.0. So I went to http://browsers.evolt.org and started downloading IE5.5sp2.exe. 87MB of it. Gonna' take 5 hours.
Well, I hopped on my rig, downloaded it and burned a copy in about 7 minutes.
I put the CD in the HP and clicked on it.....Well, it ran off a bunch of DOS so fast I couldn't read it. Restarted the computer and it never shut down, waited about 20 minutes and then hit the off button. Rebooted and did it all again. This time it shut down and is now attempting to load---I guess. It's been at it for 25 minutes.
How am I supposed to load IE5.5 from a CD onto this HP?
Commands, voodoo, etc.??
Thank you,
Spaceman

Did you try copying the file from the CD to the HP HD, and running it from there?

Hi ski !!
Thanks for the response......
It was weird. I couldn't get the HP to give my anything but a shortcut to the cd----then, the HP could not "read from the source".
I finally just downloaded and installed IE6 from the MS site and called it quits.
I really prefer IE5.5, but-------ah, well. Whomever I give this to won't know the difference.
If you have other ideas, I would appreciate it.

I asked my expert and here's the instructions:
you need to copy the file to your hard drive first and change the attributes to archive. You can not run the installation from a CD. Do this by right clicking and selecting properties on the file you saved to your hard drive. Now make another folder and run the exe file. You get a DOS box that works like a zip file and you need to unpack the contents to the newly created folder. Name the folder IE5.5 setup or something of your choosing as long as you know what it is. Once you have unpacked all the files into the newly created folder, find the file named IE5SETUP.EXE in the files that unpacked and run it. It will install IE5.5SP2. You can chose the full install or custom install. If you chose custom install which is what I always chose, you will be able to pick what you want to install and what you don't want to install. All items that do not need to be installed because your current version of IE is already on your system will be in bold type. It's simple once you get started and see how it goes.

Hello imadreamer2,
Thank you for the response and the effort that you've put in. I'll learn how to do this with another computer and I really appreciate your help.
