Red X

The other day my daughter opened or downloaded a SearchBar of some variety. I ran Ad-aware 6, it found many spyware files.
I quarantined ALL of the files! Later that day I discovered when I visit Yahoo to check my mail, the places where a picture should be there is a Red X.


On all of the other sites I visit everything is fine!


This is on my main computer, on the other 2 computers in the room all is good!

I've restored the quarantined files, still the same. I've checked all the necessary boxes in Internet Options, still the same. I've done a total Restore on WindowsXP Pro, still the same. I've removed all Reference to Yahoo in the Registery, then restored it with the References from one of the other computers, still the same.

Any ideas???? TIA

Thanks for the quick response. I had already checked everything from the link you posted. I went ahead and double checked myself though. The Red X's only show up on the Yahoo site! The Pictures I posted pull up just fine on this site (Virtual Dr). Every other Site I go to come up just fine with the pictures. I know its not Yahoo either, I can access Yahoo on my other computers with pictures intact.

Probably in the Hosts folder, the address that is and that is shortcutting the address to that ad. Thus you see the red X.

Hi!

Just to expand on what Train said, here's how to check your hosts file:

Open a command prompt (eg Start - Run - cmd)
Then type the following (presuming your Windows is on drive C):
cd c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -r -s -h hosts
type hosts
In normal circumstances your hosts file doesn't really need anything in it at all so if you see anything other than perhaps
127.0.0.1 localhost
then be suspicious.
You can edit the hosts file using notepad or the DOS edit.com command and delete any offending lines.

Got it working again through your help. I couldn't delete the files through DOS or Notepad (not sure why, but I was able to delete them in Windows. After deleting the files I opened IE, still nothing. Then I hit (my computer upside the head), oh I guess it was the Refresh Button in IE. All the pictures returned.
I've worked on computers that have had All pictures on All sites having a Red X but never on one that was selective like this.

Yes, when you have a RedX or two only on one webpage it probably is a (temporary) server problem. If that is the problem, the two quickest solutions are
1) Refresh
2) Right click on RedX and click Show Picture.

I've had that happen on many occasions with a few here and there, but this was happening only on the one computer & Yahoo! I have three other computers running in the house and all of these were fine!
The Refresh Button Only worked after I deleted the files in the Host Folder.

bugspop1--Thanks for the feedback.
Since the parts of the Yahoo page that were RedX's are not really ads, but functioning parts of the page, I jumped to the wrong conclusion.
However the Show Pictures thing often works.
