MS Support for Win98
Most have already seen that MS has issued a new cumulative patch for IE, KB832894. It is the first since the support for Win98 was "extended", so I was pleased to see that Windows Update offered it to me.
If you read the Security Bulletin MS04-004 you will see that Win98 is not mentioned among the OS's to which the patch applies. A little digging (I think it was the + next to Frequently Asked Questions), however, contains the following statement:
"Why is the update available for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me)?
Security updates for these platforms would normally be available by request through assisted support channels, however since the issues repaired in this bulletin were reported publicly prior to this announcement http://support.microsoft.com/default...bLN%5d;LifeAn1 the Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 version of this patch will be supported on those operating systems for this release. See this announcement http://support.microsoft.com/default...bLN%5d;LifeAn1 and the Microsoft Support Lifecycle site http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=lifecycle for additional information on support options for these platforms."
Seems a bit ominous about the meaning of future "extended support" for Win98 and what will be offered on Windows Update.

DELTREE--Not sure I understand. The update is for IE. Per what I quoted above, it does affect Win98/ME and is being made available to Win98/ME users. But the quote makes it sound like this is a special case and we (Win98/ME) will not get these updates through Windows Update in the future.

The fix is for IE. It does not matter what version of Windows you use. MS seems to making the point, by listing OS's involved, that they really are no longer supporting Win98/ME except in special situations.
BTW--The latest email Microsoft Windows Security Bulletin Summary for February 2004, that I received today, says

Not sure what to say if you are not being offered the fix at Windows Update. Have you looked again? (Windows Update is sometimes a little slow.) Or just get it through the link for the version of IE that you run.

ski--WinXP update patch or IE6 SP1 update patch? The latter I can understand.
I see you do not even have XP on your PC. Did you click the correct update from all those offered in MS04-004? If you did not use Windows Update, it might be an easier route. When I used WU, the download and installation were all in one procedure.

Jim,
Found out what the problem was.
I tried to install the IE-6 patch, and not the IE 6 SP-1 patch since I had never previously d/l IE 6 SP-1.
But when my unobserving eyes re-read the FAQ section, I noticed that the only patch which will work with a Win 98 system is the one for IE 6 SP-1.
So I d/l IE 6 SP-1, and then the patch installed just fine.
BTW, thanks for the headsup.
