Norton Anti Virus 2003 No Longer Responding

My Norton Anti Virus 2003 has suddenly quit working properly. When I booted my computer around 8:00 PM this evening, I noticed that the familiar yellow Icon was missing from the System Tray (where the clock is).

I double clicked on the Norton’s shortcut on my Desktop and the program would not open! I continued to double click until the program finally opened and the status window informed me that my E-mail Scanning was not working. I opened Options and selected my E-mail (Outlook Express) and this temporarily resolved the issue. I then rebooted my system and the same thing happened again. No Icon in the System Tray and after opening the scanning software (finally), the status window informed me that the E-mail scanning was not working.

I updated Norton’s Anti Virus and ran a scan; all came out just fine (as expected). I again rebooted my computer and alas, no Icon in the System Tray but the status window did show my E-mail scanning was working.

No new software has been installed lately except for a very minor update to Macromedia Flash Player to version 7.0.19.0 (yesterday).

How can I resolve this issue? Norton’s Anti Virus 2003 now opens ever so slowly and AFTER it opens, the Icon appears in the System Tray. Again, but for emphasis, there is a checkmark by show the auto-protect Icon in the Tray (under Options). My subscription for Live Update does not expire until August 2004. Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

    Hi Creekman,

I'm having problems too, but with my Win2000 machine - my XP one is OK. I thought I'd got a nasty, so I've just posted in the Security forum. Does this sound like the same sort of thing:

    SuperSparks,

To some degree, yes. My Norton 2003 is up to date and a scan does not show any viruses but like you are experiencing, my Norton AV 2003 opens ever so slowly and no Icon in the System Tray.

I do not care to try a System Restore since this will play havoc with the program...as experience has proven.

I have E-mailed Norton's tech support but this takes some time. At this point, I have no desire to uninstall then reinstall the software.

I will keep an eye on your post.

    Thanks for the reply.

there are some html virus' floating around the net.

most are trojans, which are designed to destroy nortons, before manifesting themselve into the system.
i've had 2 computers this week in for removal of these trojans.

    hard to doalso.
in google, there a free program called
    swatit. its a trojan killer.

and sorry guys, plan on removing all nortons files and reinstalling.

I'm going to have to go to bed now, it's 2AM!! Tomorrow I'll disconnect the router from the Internet and do the Ghost image restore again - that way it can't collect it's automatic Live Update. There were 3 today, I'm beginning to suspect it may have been caused by one of those, though I can't understand why my XP box wasn't affected. If no-one else posts I'll let you know how I get on in 18 hours or so.

an html frame virus cannot be detected by nortons, but the trojan can destroy nortons.

    fixed 2 today

Thanks to all for your replies.

I just booted my system and the exact same thing has happened...no Icon in the System Tray and an error indicating that E-mail scanning is not working. When I tried to open the Anti Virus software, is took two tries, then the E-mail scanning indicated it was OK.

Will an uninstall and reinstall of the program resolve the issue or must I completely reformat my hard drive?

    remove an reinstall nortons.

    use its built in unistaller.

    then, go to search,

    type in
symantec. remove all folders that come up.
    then, go to run line.
    type in
    regedit
open edit in there, type in nortons antivirus.
when that key comes up, right click an delete,
    reboot the system, then reinstall

    Kjanx,

What about these two additional items in Add/Remove:

    LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
    Live Update 2.0 (Symantec Corporation)

Those two entries are in addition to Norton Anti virus.

As well, there are numerous entries in the registry that pertains to Norton's Anti Virus including Live Update. Should all entries be deleted?

    Thanks,

    Creekman
