For the first time ever, I think a nasty may have got me (Resolved)

    Hi all,

I was trying to fix a trivial problem in Win2000, as described here:

    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...395#post754395

I ended up re-installing IE6, which I got from the MS Downloads site and it's caused a certain amount of havoc. Despite the fact that my Norton Internet Security 2003 is fully up to date and I'm behind a firewalled router, I think something must have crept through somehow. It is taking about 3 minutes to open NAV and all field say "Refreshing" next to them. I can't run a scan at all.

I have two instances of Win2000 on separate partitions, so I booted into the secondary instance to back up some files, and use a recent Ghost image, only to find that NAV is doing exactly the same thing. As I don't have any files to worry about in that instance of 2K I restored a 2 week old Ghost image, where I know for certain that NAV was fine, and as soon as I booted back into it NAV was doing the same thing.

I've shut down the PC, and as I'm typing this I'm doing a full scan of my WinXP machine, which thankfully, seems fine. As I've never had anything like this before, I'd like as much advice as I can get before proceeding any further.

I've got a similar problem this morning, NAV seems to work OK but it takes a minute or so to open up. I ran live update and installed the three updates there but no change.

I would disconnect the problematic computer from the network, and make as many scans with different anti-viruses as I can. As you know, many times one will pick something up that the other won't.
It wouldn't hurt to run specific scans for the big viruses (many times it disables your anti-virus and the ability to scan) such as Sircam , and maybe go through this list and see if any of them come up with anything.
I'm skeptical as to whether it really is a virus. I'm sure you are well protected, so don't see how something could get through. If it did, that would be pretty worrying!

    Hi,

I have the same problems. It is apparently caused by the latest updates to Norton. There is a thread about it over at the DSL Reports security forum starting on Page Three

    Windows7, NOD32

Yes, it's the Norton Live Update. I disconnected the network cable and restored a 2 week old Ghost Image and Norton was completely back to normal. The second I plugged the network cable back in Live Update killed Norton stone dead.

Interestingly my WinXP machine is only slightly affected, Norton takes a while to open but otherwise is working normally.

At the moment I've restored the Ghost Images and left the Win2000 PC disconnected until a fix is found.

This is less than impressive on Symantecs part, the update was still on the server as of half an hour ago, yet they must be aware of the problem by now. Not only that, but a recent test in Computer Shopper magazine showed that Norton doesn't even spot common trojans these days.

    Thanks for the help people
    Nick.

The problem seems to be with an expired verisign security certificate, whatever that is.

Found the following work around that worked for me:

    --------
    Tools->InternetOptions->Advanced->Security->CheckForPublishersCertificateRevocation needs to be UNCHECKED.

This is damn annoying and it's not the first time, a similar thing happened to a lot of people about 6 months ago.

Many thanks Mowergun, I'd just discovered that myself. It does work, at least as a workaround for the moment.

Got this from another board posted by Bob Cerelli:
This has nothing to do with Norton Updates, Viruses or Spyware etc.

For a description of the problem see:

    http://slashdot.org/articles/04/01/0...tid=172&tid=95

On three computers, that had problems before and after the latest updates of Norton, went to:

    https://getca.verisign.com/update.html

and installed the certificate. Now things work fine (right click and Word are back to normal).

    Cowboy622:

Nice catch... but I swear, this is just another in a long, LONG, list of reasons to not do business with Symantec any longer.

After being a NAV customer since the very first version, I've switched my entire company and consulting community over to AVG. I'm simply sick of spending hours of my time trying to keep Symantec products working correctly. Not to mention the uninstall nightmares in the later versions.

    Just my 2¢ worth...
