Wrong path to Quick Launch folder

    Hi all,

One of my users has lost her Quick Launch icons. On further investigation I found that the folder is where it should be with all the correct permissions set, but instead of IE looking in D:\Documents and Settings\Bongi\Application Data\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch it is telling me that it can't find the folder in D:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

Do any of you guys know where I can change the file path back to the correct location, presumably in the Registry?
    Nick.

I searched for it on my XP machine, but was unable to find it. My guess is it uses a GUID.

I would suggest you check out the user profile. I'm thinking that chances are if the path to Quick Launch has beem modified, chances are other things have been modifies as well (path to 'My Documents. etc).

Everything else is as it should be. I hunted high and low in the Registry but I can't find anything. I went in to her account and unchecked Quick Launch from the Taskbar>Toolbars menu, then re-checked it and this time I got the usual helpful MS error message "Canntot create toolbar specified". Thanks Microsoft that's really useful

I may have to try repairing IE6 I think.

Since Quick Launch is a product of IE, you may be on to something. By making a simple registry change, you can completely reinstall IE6.....

    1. Run regedit.
    2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
    Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}.
    3. Right-click the Reg_DWORD value IsInstalled.
    4. Select Modify.
    5. Change the Value Data to 0.
    6. Exit the editor.
    7. Reinstall IE 6.0.
    8. If you also want to reinstall Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0, make
the same registry changes to the value at
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
    Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}.

    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Well that was a fun evening. I tried both the dll and the re-install of IE6, neither of which cured the problem. But it did manage to bring Windows 2000 to its knees with Explorer crashing every few seconds.

Not to worry, I thought, I'll use my Ghost Image from a couple of weeks ago. So I booted into my other instance of Win 2000 to backup a few files first and found that that's gone weird too. I've got a horrible feeling I've got a virus, though my Norton Internet Security is fully up to date and I'm behind a firewalled router as well. At the moment NAV takes about 3 minutes to open, then comes up with "Refreshing" in every field, and won't let me scan for viruses.

I'm going to post in the Security forum and see what the gurus there can come up with.

Thanks for the help on this anyway, there was nothing wrong with the advice. D**n Microsoft, this should have been such a trivial thing to fix too

Oh well, a Ghost image fixed the problem anyway, though it seems an extreme thing to have to do to fix such an apparently simple problem. That's Windows I suppose

To cap it all there's a big problem with Norton AV Live Update that's killed Norton completely on my Win2000 machine. Maybe it's that that caused Explorer to keep crashing and not the re-install of IE6.

Good old Ghost, I don't know where I'd be without it.
    Nick.
