adding sound to web pages-html

I know the thoughts on sound. but if a (bgsound) will play a .wav file withoug asking for a player, can't I get a wav file to play when clicked on and not ask for a player. It seems if I embed a sound, it want me to choose between open or save.

Why can't it just "play" like a background file?
