    CD ROM or Motherboard problem??

I put a new motherboard in my old 9701 because my attempts to upgrade to MMX on it without knowing the proper voltage settings repeatedly took its toll it seems. I started getting random errors and difficulties that seemed to be related to the I/O part of the system. Such as scandisk catching errors that in the 6 years I've owned the system I have never had problems with except for AOL 7.0. And it not letting me uninstall/install or delete files at its whim.

Anyway, I put in the new motherboard. Hooked everything up. Now the CD Rom wont work. Its plugged in and all connections are good. I have double and triple checked this. If the new mobo is faulty, would that stop the CD ROM from even letting me get a CD out? Because it seems like it just isn't getting power. Its actually seemed to power up once or twice and let me get a CD in and out. Then it just c***s out. And the new motherboard BIOS hasn't been able to read it from minute one. What are the chances of the CD ROM going out right as I put in the new mobo? It is the stock CD Rom that was bought with the system. Its had a good life. I just wanted someones input before I started buying new CD ROMs and/or sent new mobo back.

The power supply, by the way, is brand new.

Thanks for any input anyone can give me.

    Chris

P.S. This is also the reason why I wanted to do a system restore from the HD in the other thread rather than from CD ROM as mine seems to be down.

Well if the cd rom is a double speed or a single speed it is probably not plug and play and the bios will never read it. Try replacing it with a 4 speed or better! Should be able to pick one up used very cheap!

No, its an 8 speed CD Rom and is plug'n play. Even with the CD Rom disconnected from the motherboard if there is power going to it it should still let me eject and insert CDs shouldn't it? It acts like its not getting any juice or maybe has just crapped out. At least thats what I'm hoping, and that it isn't the BRAND NEW motherboard.

A31Chris, do you have an unused molex (power) plug? Tried it? How about the IDE ribbon cable?

While removing new mobo to reinstall old one, long story, will make new thread for it. I discovered that despite my checking and doublechecking the secondary IDE ribbon cable to the motherboard >CDRom was only half on on the motherboard side. You know how there is two rows of pins to insert ribbon cable connector to on the motherboard? Well, I was up one row too high. Made sure connections were good when reinstalling old mobo and here I am with everything working for the time being.

    Thanks for everyones input.

Well, I finally got around to reinstalling my new motherboard, making sure all the connections(IDE and otherwise) are done correctly to the best of my ability. And she seemingly has no trouble reading the CDRom or loading the OS now. So everything appears A-OK so far.

That was damn peculiar with the CD Rom the last time though. It wouldn't even let me open the tray to get a CD out. Hmmm. Must of been a fail-safe that shut everything down when it detected it was hooked up incorrectly to protect the system.

I will keep everyone updated in a few days or so if everything is still Kosher. (Hears audience groan, annoyed.)
