Nec 9701 OEM setup from HD??

Instead of using my restore CD, I tried using the setup program that is usually in Windows/options/cabs. It has an OEM setup program, but when I run it, it says it can't be used from a Windows shell. So I reboot in MSDOS mode and run the program. It tells me to insert 95 startup disk and reboot to begin setup.

Well, I tried that, and it just boots to a command prompt from the startup disk. Why would they tell me to do this? Unless they intend for me to Fdisk the HD or something? In which case I would just use the system restore disk. Usually you run setup from Windows and it will reinstall itself. Mine doesn't seem to want to do that.

The only other setup in Windows/options/cabs on my computer is a setup program for the ATI graphics card.

Anyone have any idea how to get my OEM 95 to reinstall itself from the HD or am I stuck with my only option being a complete system restore using my system disk?

No, just trying to do a system restore from the hard drive instead of the CD rom. Windows ME allows that, and I heard that 95 will too I just can't figure out the trick.

You can't reinstall windows from windows so.... Since all of the cab files are not on your hard drive with just a basic install of windows (which is why it asks for the cd whenever you install additional hardware) I would think you would need to copy the cab files to your hard drive before you could reinstall Win95.

    To Do this...

Put your cd in the cd rom. insert your win 98 start up disk.

at the a:\> prompt type in c: and hit enter.

You should now be at the c:\> prompt Now type in md win95
    and hit enter

Now type in copy e:\win95 c:\win95 and hit enter (This assumes e: is your cd rom drive letter.

    Now type in cd c:\win95

Your prompt should now look like c:\win95>

Now just type setup and away you go!

If it ain't broke, you arn't trying hard enough!!

    Hi A31Chris:

Don't use "OEMSETUP.EXE" -- that may try to reformat your hard drive. It's designed for use by equipment manufacturers who are starting out with an unformatted hard drive.

Follow JAL's instructions -- use "SETUP.EXE" at the DOS prompt after you put all the CD's "WIN95" folder files into your "C:\WIN95" folder.
