Windows 95 updates no longer available?
It seems MS no longer has the Windows 95 updates available on their site anymore.
Anyone know anywhere else I can get them??

OK, thanks. Someone on Annoyances was saying it wasn't available anymore and IE 5.5 was telling me the site wasn't there anymore. So I just assumed...

Howdy:
You won't get anything for Win95 past Aug 2000 when Microsoft ended all support for Win95..

Surprisingly, there was a new update on there a few months ago. I think the update worked with all the OSes maybe so they just let it slip into the 95 updates. It really shocked the hell out of me to see that new update when it popped up.

IE 5.5 is still supported under Windows ME but it's days are numbered! Occaisionally a patch will work on IE 5.5 (under 95B) and since ME is 9x based more times then not, it will work with IE 5.5 in windows 95B on up!
I am a little bothered by the fact they have things that work in operating systems and when the service life is over they take back all the cool stuff and revert back to less desirable stuff. This only makes the operating system more obsolete and forces a upgrade, if you didn't save all the old stuff! It's already there on their website, and it really doesn't cost anything to leave it there! Does anybody else think this is a little wrong? If you get a virus or your hard drive craps out, and then if you didn't save it.... it's all over and you can't get it. How wrong is that?
If it ain't broke, you arn't trying hard enough!!

FWIW, Microsoft still has ancient things like their "MS-DOS 6.nn Supplemental Disks", "MS-DOS 6.nn to 6.22 upgrade", "Windows 3.10 to 3.11 Refresh Files" and the "Windows [3.1n] Resource Kit" available for download:

No, I disagree. Its c**ap what they are doing. What of those of us who still have the older computers? What of those of us who have newer computers AND our older ones because we still like them. 98se is too big for a Pentium I and will tend to slow it down. I don't want to be 'forced' by anyone to get rid of my old computer and get a new one just so they can make money off of me. I don't like being told what to do.
As for the Microsoft updates, they don't usually download as install programs in the traditional sense that you can make backups for, or I would of done that long ago.
Not to mention Microsofts 'NEW' stuff is usually buggy as hell. What about ME?? Man that operating system s***s. Even Microsoft basically admits that it s***s. But have they refunded anyone the money they spent on that lemon? If they have, I haven't heard anything about it.

How long should any manufacturer be forced to keep on paying to support everything they have ever produced?
What if there is only one person left worldwide with an old product?
The longer you force them to support their old products, the higher the price must be for their new releases.
A31Chris> I don't like being told what to do.
Might as well get used to it; it's a fact of life.

I'm afraid you'll have to get used to it as next year downloads for 98 will also disappear unless you pay for extended support.
One could argue from a green point of view that theres going to be an awful lot of redundant hardware floating around unless its used with Linux.

Well, the company doesn't have to be forced to support everything they've made forever. They should at least give us the option of making our own backups and we can take care of our own support.

Well, I'm sure over in there in communist China people have to get use to that, but here in the good old U.S. of A some of us still value freedom of choice.

A31Chris--While MS no longer makes new updates available to Win 95 users (and in a month will no longer make them available to Win98 users), I believe the old updates will remain at Windows Update, and this seems confirmed above.
Security updates should still be available to all at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.asp
and I am not sure what will happen if you go to
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp
and indicate you want the updates for WinME. (Maybe users of old OS's will no longer be able to access it. We, who use Win98, will have to see, or do users of Win95 already know???)
But if that site is still accessible, it may be that MS is basically saying they are not guaranteeing that a new update will work on the old systems.
Just my 2cents.
