Obtaining IE for a Windows 3.1 pc

I recently resurrected an old pc running Windows 3.1. In the process I reloaded the original software and deleted IE and the dialer that connected the pc to my ISP.

How do I go about getting a loadable copy of IE? Can one order it on a CD or diskettes, from whom? Can I download it from the internet to a CD on a different pc and then install it from that Cd to the W3.1 pc? ...wdc

If that PC is connected to the Internet and has a working browser, you can download and install Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 3.1 (with 128-bit encryption) from this Microsoft page: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...it/default.asp

If you don't have Internet access, the following Microsoft page states that "you can order Internet Explorer 4.01 on CD-ROM from Microsoft at (800) 360-7561." http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=184330

Or, if you're on another internet-capable PC, you can download the full version of Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 3.1x, (9.4 MB) from this page: http://www.triode.net.au/ConnectionKits/upgrade.html (They also have Netscape 4.08 for Windows 3.1 [14.6 MB]).

If you're looking for an older (smaller) version, Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 3.1 can be downloaded from this page: http://www.frostburg.edu/admin/acaco...in3.x/mie3.htm

A variety of classic Windows 3.1 browsers can be downloaded from this Tucows page: http://classic.tucows.com/softweb_default.html (More Windows 3.1 software links http://classic.tucows.com/win3xsoft.html ).

Vernon: Thanks for such a comprehensive reply. I am going to try downloading from one of these sources onto a CD on my W98 pc and then copying to my W31 pc. I assume the correct copy command is G:\>copy filename C:\windows, right?

Hope I have better luck than Steppenwolf. ....wdc

zipulrich (and others): Thanks for the urls on older versions of IE. My pc has only about 80MB of free memory space, so I certainly do not want IE6. Which version do you think I should get? wdc

wdc> Vernon: Thanks for such a comprehensive reply.

    You're Wclcome.

wdc> I assume the correct copy command is G:\>copy filename C:\windows, right?

    It is if:

    1) the "filename" you want to copy is in your current directory

    and

    2) you want to copy "filename" to the "c:\windows" directory (folder).

If you're speaking of a downloaded, unzipped (uncompressed) file though, I'd copy it to a temporary directory first, unzip it, install it, then delete the temporary directory. This way you don't have all those temporary files cluttering up your "c:\windows" directory.

wdc> Which version do you think I should get?

The highest version that'll run on Windows 3.1 and fit on your hard drive.
