Strange Dialup Networking Problem
Hi All,
I've got this sick computer that won't connect to the Internet. We first found that the modem was bad -put in a new one, but now, though it dials, it can't connect.
The symptoms are strange. TCP/IP is "bound" to the modem in Control Panel | Networking; Windows Login and Client for Microsoft Networks are there also. All diagnostics on the modem are fine, and it dials and tries to connect properly. However, when you right click on the dialup icon in Dialup Networking and go to Properties, then go to Server Types | TCP/IP Settings, nothing happens. That is, the button grays but you go nowhere (i.e., never get to the TCP/IP windwo). Accordingly, the error that we get when we try to connect to the Internet says that "Could not negotiate a network protocol", suggesting that it, too, could not find the TCP/IP settings.
We have uninstalled/reinstalled TCP/IP, Windows Network, Client for Microsoft Networks, Dialup Networking, and the specific dial-in. All have no effect on the problem.
We checked the hard disk and file system and
fixed a bunch of problems, but this too had no effect on the dialup networking problem. Next, we reinstalled Windows (Win 95c), and,
this too had no effect on the problem. We re-reinstalled Win95c, and this, too had no effect. We tried a second modem, and the same problems persist (we tried both PCI and ISA modems; the ISA WinModem has worked better than the PCI modem but neither connects).
We're a bit frustrated. Any way we can get this work save re-formatting and starting fresh?
Thanks for your help!

Hello Dere
It looks as if you have made every reasonable effort to fix the problem.
If it were me I would format the drive and start over.
Then again I though everything went to hell when Henry agreed to offer the Ford in anything but black --- and y'all can see what THE HELL THAT LEAD TO!!

Dear Lynn,
Thanks for the advice - it's, sadly, the direction that I've been heading. Unfortunately, there are about 150 apps on the machine. Rebuilding it will be a royal
pain . . . But, it's nice to have some support in misery
Best regards,
Shaun

Your post indicates that the machine is networked. Perhaps you could save the user's programs to a network drive before nuking it ??
I work in a 2500+ user environment at the moment and I can understand your pain.
