    Outlook storage files

I'm trying Outlook and have imported everything from Outlook Express.

What's got me confused is my storage folder for OE was about 239MB while the pst file for Outlook is only 57.7MB.

    Why the huge size difference?

Deleting messages in Outlook/OE never actually frees up the space - it simply marks the entries as deleted. Unless you compact the store once in a while, it'll grow rather large over time. When you do the import, it doesn't copy over those deleted items.

Thanks Tuttle, I tried that and only managed to squeeze it down to 236MB from 239MB.

Looking in my OE store folder I notice I've got 4 tmp files labeled:

    ~ss6AA.tmp
    ~ss40C.tmp
    ~ss565.tmp
    ~ssD74.tmp

Each is 39.1MB. What's the purpose of these and can they be deleted?

Edit: I'll just move them somewhere else and see what happens.
