    200mhz mmx cpu socket 7???

Can someone give me a hand here and tell me if this CPU looks like its for a socket 7 motherboard? I bought it before asking (real stupid, I know) and then thought of it and emailed the seller but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

It looks to me like it is but I want to make sure.

    200mhz mmx socket 7 CPU?

Thanks! Thats a load off of my mind.

Whats the fan for? I thought 200mhz mmx pentiums didn't get that hot? I don't think there is a provision to plug the fan into my motherboard anyway.

They usually have either a low-profile heatsink with fan, like that one, or a larger passive heatsink (typically black with long vertical fingers). A fan keeps the CPU cooler if the case ventilation is not good. A lot of older cases needed holes drilled in the front panel to get decent airflow through them.

The fan will connect to one of the drive Molex connectors, not to the motherboard.

Well, On my NEC Ready system I have the heatsink with the long black fingers.

Molex conector? The white connector (Molex) next to the fan in the picture has 4 wires going to a similar socket which is out of the picture at the top. This plugs onto one of the several Molex connectors that come from the power supply & connect to hard drives & CD-ROMs. It can either go on a spare one, or if there are none spare, be inserted into the feed going to one of the drives. This type of connection means there is no need to have a fan connector on the motherboard.
