    novell netbios

    what is "novell netbios" and can i use it to secure my linksys wireless network??????

    It doesn't really have anything to do with securing a wireless network.

    For the record its an implementation of the NetBIOS protocol transported over IPX. Sort of obsolete nowadays...


    The best way to secure your home wireless network is to enable WEP which provides encryption of the traffic. Basically you punch in a certain key on the router/access point and put this same key on all the machines. They key has to be the same for it to decrypt the traffic. Linksys lets you specify a "passphrase" like "The big red dog runs fast" and it then convert that to a big key of garbled text... its easier than typing out the whole key yourself, but you can if you want.

    SEcurity depends on what wireless standard you are using. 802.11b is only able to use WEP but 802.11g is capable of using WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) but it is not added thru the course of the regular MS Updates. You most download Knowledge Base Article 815485 to get this protection.
