How to post screen captures on this forum.

I was wondering if someone could give me instructions for how to post the Alt+print screen screen captures on this forum and if it is even possible. I tried to before when I was having modem difficulties. But cut'n paste to paint and saving it as a bitmap file then trying to attach it on here didn't work. I got a file too big error. I also tried changing it to bitmap on the clipboard viewer and doing a straight cut'n paste on this forum and that didn't seem to work either.

    Thanks.

I just did this for another topic using the following method:

    1. Hit the PrintScreen button
    2. Open Photoshop and File>New
    3. Ctrl+V to paste clipboard image to new image
    4. Crop as needed
    5. Save as .jpg file, optimized for web use

In a nutshell your main problem, relative to file size, is most likely your file format, namely .bmp. Try saving as a .jpg or .gif instead.

Thanks. I don't have photoshop. I just have paint. But I will poke around with it and see what different types of files I can save the image as.

Chris, I did a quick PrintScreen and pasted to Paint, then saved as both .bmp and .jpg (so yes, you can save as .jpg in Paint) and the difference in file size confirmed my suspicion; the .bmp was almost 2.5MB while the same image in .jpg form was only 102kb.

    Hi Chris and Mike:

You MAY NOT be able to save files as JPG in MSPAINT -- it all depends on whether or not you have any MSOFFICE components installed. (Don't ask me to explain why this is -- we all heard Bill Gates when he explained to Congress why all these components need to be interconnected -- and he wouldn't lie to Congress, would he?)

In any event, you may want to try a freeware program called IRFANVIEWER -- it can't do a lot of editing, but it'll read and save all kinds of file types. It also has a great SLIDE SHOW feature.
    Download from:
    http://www.irfanview.com/

If you want more heavy-duty editing, look at PAINTER23, also free. It's not real big on documentation, but if you know something about photo editing programs, you can probably do a lot more with it than I can.
    Download from:
    http://jansfreeware.com/jfgraphics.htm

    Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I poked around paint and could find no apparent way to change from .bmp to .jpg. I guess I'll have to download that program you gave the link to if I want to post screen captures on this board.

A31chris, I second Irfanview. I use ver. 8.3 & Plugins, set as default viewer...

    A31Chris--
    1) Do not let me discourage you from installing Irfanview (actually at version 3.85 now), which is an excellent program, but you can enable MSPaint to save as .jpg or .gif in addition to .bmp.

    2) What this thread so far is leading to is to allow you to put an active link to your image in your VDr message. If you want to actually put the image in your message, you will have to have a webspace site (like Webshots, My Image Station or maybe supplied by your ISP), upload the picture there and then put the URL of the picture in your message.

    Hi Welshjim:

I've tried that "Make MSPAINT use JPG files" fix on 3 different WIN95 machines, and have yet to get it to work. The author even states that it "may not work for Windows 95."

Did you get it to work for you?

jerry4dos--The fix works fine for me, but I run Win98. Regrets. You can always use Irfanview (though I have not checked if it works on Win95).

Hey guys, I've had Irfanview for a while now. It works great for images that are already in .jpg format. There seems to be no option to convert it from .bmp--->.jpg. Like say if I were to try to save a screencapture. Wait, I"m going to try to move it from clipboard to Irfanview, see if I can get a screencapture as Jpeg.

O.K., I got it figured out now. I took a alt+printscreen screenshot of Ad-aware and didn't checkmark the bitmap option on clipboard viewer or anything. Opened it with Irfanview. Told it to save to desktop as Jpeg file. Viola!! Ready to go jpeg image. Now I can annoy you all with screenshots of my computer troubles!!! Muahaahahaahahahaahahahahaahahahah!!!!
