Wireless - Ping but no client connect.
A friend has a wireless network for sharing the cable internet.
The host is Win98Se.
The client WinXP Home.
The host accesses the internet just fine.
The client used to access the internet before installing McAfee Internet Security and then improperly uninstalling it.
The client can PING www.yahoo.com and yahoo.com. It can not TRACERT.
I understand from readings that the host should show an IP address of 192.168.0.x.
And the client 192.168.1.x.
However the Host in this case is showing 192.168.1.101
and the client is showing an IP address of 192.168.1.100
Q1. Does anyone think that I am wasting time being concerned about the IP addresses?
Q2. Does anyone know what the McAfee situation would have changed or killed on the client system that can be undone?
(Networking is all new to me)

they should both be receiving .100 or .101 ip addresses from the router that part looks just fine....make sure that the xp machine is set up on the same channel and ssid that the router is set to would be the first thing I would look for.....looks like maybe a dlink router since those are the ip ranges it uses...however could be any other router too.....more details would all one of us to give better instructions on where and how to set this up correctly......improper removal of that mcafee problem could be what is causing the trouble.

Like Sarrkazztic just mentioned those ip addresses are just fine. The ip addresses that fall inside local area networking fall in these ranges:
10.0.0.1 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
The fact the ip address changed makes be beleive that DHCP is present.

Thank you very much for taking your time to provide input to this problem.
Linksys PCI wireless router.
Devices are working properly.
I can ping the client machine from the host and visa versa. I can ping each machine's own IP.
msinfo32.exe shows both winsocks dlls as installed.
Both machines required cleanup with CWShredder and SpyBot S&D. (msinfo was not loading on the Host machine) The client machine was being redirected to another search engine for all input but then, of course, could not find the page with DNS mentioned at the bottom. Everything seems to be cleaned up in this regard.
I ran "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" within the Run, CMD box to recover from a possible improper TCP/IP configuration.
Both machines are set to automatically detect settings.
My "Networking" ignorance has got me baffled.
I am considering a clean reinstall of WinXP on the client machine. (once I figure out the correct procedure to do so.) The XP machine is less than two months old and would not be subjected to losses. It came with a Dell Installation CD.
Dell says we need to talk to McAfee and McAfeee says we need to talk with MS.
Hope I have covered most or all of the information that can assist anyone to direct us to a resolve.

The fact that you can ping is good. Have you tried ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew at the command prompt on the client machine? I don't know what it would do for you but it will renew your network settings. From your description, it sounds like it might have been the change after the improper removal of McAfee.
The other solution is to completely delete your network settings on the client and start over. Click Start > Run > type in: devmgmt.msc and press the <Enter> key. Expand Network Adapters and uninstall any network adapters you have. Then restart your machine and let XP Home detect any adapters you have and if need to be supply the drivers or let Windows detect them if it can.

I did try IP release and renew to no avail.
I will try deleting the network settings as you have noted.

Well, I tried it all to no avail including all of the restore points.
The restore points were deemed as invalid and unusable by XP due to the fact that the driver for the Linksys PCI card was not signed.
I wound up doing a format and fresh install. I determined some spyware or trojan had mucked with a registry setting that I could not locate to fix.
All is working good now.
