G'day mate.
The 810 is the support chipset for the CPU and probably the on-board graphics, but doesn't tell us the sound used.
Do you know if the sound is on the motherboard, or if there is a separate sound card fitted?
If the sound is on-board, do you know what the motherboard is, manufacturer and model, or if the system is a namebrand, it's brand and model?
If you don't know any detail of the system, and don't want to open it up and look for chips etc, you could download and run the Aida utility and let us know what it reports for the sound hardware:

Gotta know motherboard manufacturer and model to make it easy.
Intel 810 is kinda like saying soundblaster... Good, but not enough.

Step 4: Restoring the sound drivers
Use the recovery process to restore individual drivers for an HP desktop's sound or combination sound-modem card.
*
If the HP desktop came with recovery discs (Windows 98 and Me), place the last disc of the set into the top disc drive and follow the on-screen menus as they appear. For more information, refer to: HP Pavilion PCs - Restoring the Original Drivers and Software.
*
If the HP desktop computer came with Windows XP preinstalled, the recovery process is performed from the start menu. Click Start, All Programs, HP Tools, HP Application Recovery and follow the screens that appear. For more information, refer to: HP Pavilion PCs - Restoring the Original Drivers and Software.
Restart the computer after restoring the sound driver software and test for sound. If there is still no sound, continue to the next Step.
