router security
i just got dsl and a wireless router (linksys BEFW11S4 802.11b) and i need to know how to have the router prompt for a username and password before it will allow any computer to log onto it and acess the services and also how to create the usernames and passwords
OS- windows xp pro (build 2600)

First, get the router setup on the same network as your computer (wired or wireless). Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser. Default username is blank (empty), password is "admin". You can change this password from the "password" tab. I don't think there is a way to add a username too...
Is that the password you're refering to?

That type of functionality is usually only built into higher-end firewalls or proxy servers, consumer-based routers won't have it.
If you're worried about people accessing your wireless connection, then check into setting the MAC address settings for allowable connections (although this can take away from the wireless convenience of allowing any wireless device to connect) and setting WEP for protection (although this isn't foolproof, and the previous point also applies).
