Error message
When I try to open Display > Settings > Advanced tab, I get message:
An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL "C:\WINDOWS\System32\desk.cpl, Display"
How to fix problem

have you updated or installed any new video drivers? if so, i would roll back to previous driver and see if that does it for you.

Go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. You'll need your XP CD handy. That'll replace any corrupt or missing system files.

supersparks, if he has installed new video drivers, a scan will do nothing to correct that will it? the files are from the 3rd party driver. correct me if im wrong. the info provided by mikekea is rather spartan in content, but it has got to be a video driver related problem with that error message.

No it won't replace any 3rd party drivers, but the reason I suggested the System File Checker is the System32\desk.cpl bit. That's a Control Panel applet and thus a system file. SFC won't do any harm anyway. But you could be right, it might be a video driver.

yes sir, i kind of thought the same thing after i posted that about the native file listed in the error, but didnt know if a 3rd party dll was using it as well.
