Another hijacked web browser, nothing has worked yet to fix it
My IE browser has been taken over by "globe-finder.com". I continuously change my home page back to the one I use and it will remain that way, sometimes for a few days, but then it goes back to globe-finder.
I have searched the web for some info on this problem and have read that the same thing has happened to others with this same site and different ones. All of the sites are suspicious as well, having no such contact information or anywhere to email anyone.
I tried the download of "hijack this" and deleted some suspicious files and I thought I had it fixed but the page came back. I also ran Ad-Aware which hasn't solved the problem. I don't have any cookies or temporary files, or cache on my comp from this site that I can find.
I read some more info on deleting some stuff from the registry, but it was a bit fuzzy so I didn't want to try it yet.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Please post your HijackThis log here.........That's a CoolwebSearch domain. They are now adding "things" that cause the hijack to "come back". Let's find it.

I deleted everything that had something to do with a counter, at the top of the list, also the very last thing, some .bmp file, and a couple of other things, but now they are listed again. I'm not sure if I deleted them before, Hijack this says "click yes to delete or fix" something similar to that, so... were the files deleted or fixed???? Obvioulsy they are back, or were never deleted the first time.
Let me know.
Thanks

roadie28.....d/l Coolwwwebsearch Shredder: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
that'll clear out a lot of stuff
run it...reboot
then rescan with HijackThis.........look for this entry & if it's still there.....check it off...."Fix"..reboot
F1 - win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\..\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\MSINFO\msinfo.exe hpfsched
then please do a "Find"..for msinfo.exe....please note & post the path where you actually locate it..these creeps have been moving it around..... then delete..(not msinfo32.exe....that's a legit file)
then post a new Log.

The above link has a program called Browser Hijack Blaster. You might want to check this out.
Also on that website is a wonderful program called Spyware Blaster. This program stops a lot of spyware programs from ever getting installed in the first place! I have been trying it at home for a month or 2 and I have seen far less spyware. Most the time when I run Spybot it finds nothing!
I have not tried Spyware guard yet, I have been meaning to. According to the site it seems to be better than the Hijack browser program.

Well I am not sure what to say. I ran the download that DiscoGail suggested and it found a load of stuff and fixed it. Then I also downloaded some security update patches from Windows Update. I restarted my comp and had two error messages, one saying that it could not locate msinfo.exe, the other saying it could not locate win.ini and to check the paths.
I thought that msinfo was not needed, and i guess the CoolWeb shredder got rid of it, but now my comp says it needs it, maybe not???
One possible good thing though, when I started IE, the home page just went to a blank page since I hadn't reset my home page. At least it didn't go back to the hacked site. So maybe that problem is fixed.
Let me know about the error messages.
Thanks!

Could you post a current HijackThis log? This --> F1 - win.ini: run=hpfsched should show up now....instead of the F1 entry referred to previously, as a result of using the CWS shredder.........it's OK..(actually just an unnecessary background task that you don't need running)....just post a log.

please do this.......run the CWS shredder again........the one you got from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
open it...then click "Check for Updates"..then "Next"....at that point....follow its instructions..& make sure that all other browser windows are closed....it won;'t work if any are open.....let it run.....then afterward...hit "next" again......what does the report say? (there should be a reference to msinfo.exe & what was done). Then reboot....rescan with HijackThis & post a log.

OK so I ran the CWShredder and this is what it said:
Done!
- 0 registry values were killed
- Hostsfile was OK
- Bootconf.exe was not present
- Trusted Zone was OK
- User stylesheet was OK
- Oemsyspnp.inf was not present
- Svchost32.exe was not present
- Msspi.dll Winsock hook was not present
- Msinfo.exe was not present
- Winshow.dll BHO was not present
- MadFinder BHO was not present
- Ctfmon32.exe was not present
Then I restarted my comp, but the same error messages appeared again. 1. msinfo.exe could not be found. 2. msinfo.exe could not load or run as specified in the win.ini file. It said to fix it, or remove msinfo.exe from the win.ini file.
So how do I remove it from the win.ini file??? If msinfo.exe is not a valid program, how come my comp is looking for it?
Then I ran HijackThis as you said and this is what it came up with:

I don't know what any of this means, so let me know what I can do. So far though, my web browser hasn't changed back to the other site, that part seems to be fixed.

I've recently made the switch to the Mozilla Firebird browser. Built in pop-up protection, some nice features and speed make it a great replacement to IE. Give it a try:
Mozilla
Choose the Firebird download, thats the browser only. It will automatically import your IE favorites the 1st time you run it.
After downloading the compressed file, its as simple as decompressing and running the .exe to get into the program. There's no installation or setup program to run.

......go to Start--> Run--> type msconfig then click OK. ...click the Win.ini tab..... the first entry should be [windows].....click the + sign you see before it..that'll expand the entry...look for the line...run= what appears after the line? some sort of combination of msinfo.exe/hpfsched?..something like that, should be in there somewhere. uncheck it,,
do a Start-->Find-->Files or Folders....for msinfo.exe.....not msinfo32.exe, that's a legit file....& delete it....if found.
reboot...
& let's see if the error message still pops up.

Good news, I did waht you said, and the error messages no longer pop up. There was a reference to msinfo.exe in the win.ini tab when I ran msconfig, so I unchecked it. Then I looked for msinfo.exe and nothing was found.
One other thing that I wanted to ask. For some time now, when I start my comp, after everything has loaded, a window pops up showing my Windows file folder. I simply just close it, no big deal, it's just a big annoyance. Now that i fixed the msinfo thing, the window still pops up, but it shows the C: drive instead. It's more annoying than being a real problem, but I'm not sure how to make it stop appearing. I'm not sure how it even began in the first place.
