Virtual memory
Hi,
My NT server keeps hanging as it struggles to allocate any virtual memory at all. The pagefile.sys was recently moved from the C drive to the E drive due to lack of space. Is it ok to move the pagefile.sys to another drive or is this the cause of my problem?

Is there anyway to clear up some space on the primary HDD? Although you can change the location of the pagefile, Microsoft does not recommend it! try moving it back after you clean up your HDD... and let us know if you get the same problem!!

Better to allocate the pagefile in two chunks - a suitably small one on the primary, and a (suitably!) large one on the secondary. If you can cleanup and defrag first, all the better - it may be fragmentation causing the problem.
Anyone can make a mistake - to make a really good job of it use a computer.

Can you have 2 pagefile.sys's? Because the server has 1GB RAM the pagefile.sys is 1GB +12MB which is quite big when the C drive is only 4GB. I have 70GB free on the E drive. Can I split the pagefile.sys over the two drives? eg 512 MB on C and have a 1GB+12MB on the E drive? Can you do this?

You'll notice both drives are listed in the allocation box - you just specify an appropriate amount for each drive. I'd bias the split towards the "quieter" drive, if you see what I mean. If they're separate drives rather than partitions, there'll be a performance benefit - this is common practice on busy servers.

Check the system event log for disk i/o errors. The second drive might be flaky.
