Source: Microsoft.com - Frequently Asked Questions Regarding System Restore in Windows XP
    Q. How is System Restore different from Backup?

    A. System Restore monitors only a core set of specified system and application file types (e.g. .exe, .dll etc), while Backup Utility typically backs up all files including users personal data files, ensuring a safe copy stored either on the local disk or to another medium. System Restore does not monitor changes to or recover users' personal data files such as documents, graphics, e-mail, and so on. While system data contained in System Restore's restore points are available to restore to for only a limited period (restore points older than 90 days are deleted by default), backups made by the Backup Utility can be recovered at any time.

Actually Vernon, ASR and System restore are different things. The ASR is a system backup that's created from the Ntbackup app (All Programs>Accessopries>Backup):

    Using ASR

    ASR Overview

I have made my ASR disk, but it requires a lot of hard drive space. I've never used it in earnest, Ghost has always got me out of trouble in the past. I just like to have it available because I'm a belt and braces kind of person when it comes to Windows.

    Re-ASR

Hi Vernon.....SYSTEM RESTORE, I Never Ever Use in XP, It Is Dissabled.....Gave me nothing but trouble in 98se & WinME.....

Hi SuperSparks......So you are another one of those 95%ers who use Ghost.......Already Read All there is about ASR, but thanks anyway for the links........What I Really WANT to Know is...IS ASR Any Good, Does it Work Well??....

I Am one of those users that Have Never Ever Done a Back-Up of my C: drive....When system has ever gone Belly-Up I normaly do a Complete Format n Instal of OS then all Programs.....
But seeing as Lots of Folk Keep Recomending that We should do a Back-Up, I thought well why not give it a Go........
I Got GHOST if Needed, but have never tried it....Is it Easy to follow n Use??.........Thanks, Dennis...

It depends which version you have, each successive one has got easier, 2003 is simplicity itself. Here is an excellent tutorial on Ghost:
