Knoppix Version Info, which is the latest?
Howdy all
A few days ago I downloaded KNOPPIX_V3.2-2003-07-26-EN.iso from doing a search at www.FileMirrors.com, i have just found out there is a newer version 3.3, but i find so many different dates on the file names that i find it quite confusing...
My Question is... Are these dates in the file name related to different builds of Knoppix, meaning that's when it was released? or are the dates based on something else to do with the server they're stored on?...
...assuming it's build related, that would mean a new build is released sometimes after only a few of days, wow, do they really update it that often... these differently dated files have slightly different sizes as reported by FileMirrors website too, which is why i think they are different builds.
I ask because i'm wanna d'load 3.3, but i just want to be sure i'm getting the latest official Version.
I'm happy to be able to dip my toes into the Linux waters with so little effort, as a bonus this Knoppix seems really very useful too.
TIA & Regards

The newest i've found is KNOPPIX_V3.3-2003-09-24-EN.iso, but i get no hits on FileMirrors for the date u mentioned... hmmm, now it's seeming more likely that these dates may have nothing to do with different builds, but like i said it's weird how they have different file sizes reported, strange...
The link u posted, i believe u meant www.linuxiso.org sends me KNOPPIX_V3.3-2003-09-22-EN.iso, maybe i should just grab that one and be happy
Still interested to know what these dates are all about tho, anyone know if they related to different builds or...?

If I'm not mistaken, Knoppix is supposed to be a user freindlier version of Debian. If tthis is true, then you do not have to keep downloading new iso's to remain current. Check to see if you have the apt package loaded. Apt is your friend. If you do, pretty much all you have to do is do:
apt-get update
apt-get install
These two commands are all you need to keep your system up-to-date. If you want to search for new packages, all you need is aptitude. Aptitude not only shows you all available packages, but also shows all dependancies. A great way to do business. Of coarse, that only means something if knoppix is loaded onto a hard drive.
I've been running the unstable tree of Debian for the past 5 years and wouldn't trade it for the world. -mk
If it ain't broke,
Fix it till it is.

Hi mikek147 & thx for helping out
I fully understand what u mean about having Knoppix loaded onto the hard drive and i'll note what u say for if/when i venture down that route... tho for the moment, as i expect u understand, i don't want to be jumping into that boat quite yet (with me being a Linux nOOb), at least not until i know what's what with the Bootable Knoppix CD i already have...
Originally (my reason for d'loading it) was really only to use this Knoppix CD for a recovery/repair disk, so my question isn't vitally important, but from messing around with it for a while and seeing it's potential i feel the need to explore it more and find out some background info to cure my curiosity... i don't really need the latest version just yet, but am just trying to find out info on the releases i see and it's update frequency etc...
So from what i've gathered, am i understanding right that Knoppix is updated quite regular (sometimes after only a few days) and that all these differently dated files i see are infact different builds of the same version? This seems logical to me, but i thought i'd run it past u guys to be sure.
BTW, i d'loaded KNOPPIX_V3.2-2003-07-26-EN.iso last night, but for the moment it can stay on my HDD until i learn a few more things about the current version i have, lots of reading to do i guess
