Believe it or not I found the resolution!  Installed XP using a different monitor with the original configuration. Installation went through without a hitch. Who'd a thunk it 
Just for kicks I tried installing XP on two other systems with the 2 Viewsonic monitors I had laying about in the shop and sure enough the XP install halted at the same spot.
