Max files and folders in DOS 6.22?

Hi all, I have a couple questions:

Could someone tell me what the maximum number of folders, sub-folders and files one can have in a pure DOS 6.22 machine?

What brought this up is, I was having second thoughts about my file system strategy, and wanted others thoughts/critiques on this. I generally keep all of what I call my "fundamental" commands in the C:\DOS folder, regardless of whether they were originally part of DOS. In other words, system utilities, (like Snooper), my mouse driver, Sound Blaster driver and utilities, mp3 player, graphics and movie viewers, etc, all go in there.
I keep batch files in a sub, ie., C:\DOS\BAT, and likewise with all DOS documentation, C:\DOS\DOCS.
One of the reasons I do this is, it keeps my PATH environment variable simple.

I keep what I consider to be "major" programs in their own folder. Things like Norton Utilities, Norton Commander, NAV, Pkzip, Telix, etc.

If any of you DOS aficionado's feel "talkative" tonight, I'ld love to hear your own DOS organizational strategies.

Only the ROOT directory (C:\) has a limitation on the number of files or folders, and this maximum number is set when you partition the hard drive and set the "cluster" size. It's usually 512, but sometimes can be 1024.

Any subfolder can have as many files or other subfolders and you want. Some my mine have thousands of files. However, DOS will s-l-o-w d-o-w-n if it has to look through too many files in a single directory.

    DEFRAGing regularly definitely helps.

DOS also has a maximum path depth of 80 characters, including delimiters... This means you can only nest so many directories.

Thanks for that info Jerry and AlaricD.

On a side note, I realize this is more of a tech-support type forum. Is there a forum somewhere, where folks just "talk-DOS" ?

    Thanks, Dex

    Feel free.

(As long as we don't bend any AUP rules while doing so of course).
