Computer Technology, how far...
Hey people.
I remember the time when PII-PIII's where top of the market, when it was cool to have a 16mb voodoo and 32 meg sdram, where a 4 gig hard drive seemed to last forever.
That was 4, 5 years ago. Now look what we have 3ghz+ cpus, ddr, 256meg vid cards, 300gig hdd, wireless networking.
2 years ago i went to a local puter shop and i saw 1gig pentium for over £300 and now we over tripple that for more £'s.
I know this sounds like a trip down memory lane, all of a sudden i was thinking WOW how fast is Technology moving. and i cant get it out my head, i know its an obvious thing, but sometimes you dont realize it.
What with, 64 bit cpu's and OS's, SATA, new upcoming Monitor Technology, and with all this also comes with a high price tag.
My question to you all,
Is Technology moving faster and faster for us to catch up and for the thickness of our wallets?
How fast will we see cpu's go in the next 5 years, how much more are we gonna have to spend.
Geez give us a chance to catch up.
Id like your views
Thanks

I would rather have technology go faster because I want something slobber and slave over/for... If technology went slower then a turtle, everyone would have the most up to date software/hardware....there would be no reason to brag....hehe(see below) im so proud of her!!! although shes not completely up to date shes [*-deleted word-*] close to it

I like it the way it is....like the competition that has arisen especially with vid cards. We're seeing some really terrific chipsets coming out and, even though they are expensive little buggers when they first come out, it is really making the gaming industry pump out higher quality stuff---it can only benefit the end users.
But I DO relate to the slobbering and slaving.....

Dont get me wrong i am thankful for the new technology by god we need it, i love the new stuff but it all seems to be getting more expensive and by the time you can afford it's out of date.
Will there be a 10ghz cpu how many millions more transisters can the fit on cpu.
Its kinda exciting to think about what could be next

Forget 10ghz...they recently made some interesting breakthroughs with quantum computing. Very simply, it gives you even more choices than just 1 and 0---all shades in between and achieves states that are really neither "off" or "on" (weird...I know). In another 15 to 20 years we're going to see some real wild and super-fast stuff coming out---maybe sooner if some real smart dudes come up with some additional breakthroughs. Hold on to your hats....

Sometimes I wonder if things really will be that much different in 10 or 20 years time though. Sure we'll have more RAM and faster CPU's and bigger hard drives (or perhaps we'll have moved on to some other form of storage), but I'll bet that the apps will just have got more bloated and less efficient and we won't be doing anything very differently to what we are doing now.
I vividly remember listening to a fascinating programme on the radio as I was driving to work back in the mid '70s. The "guru" was promising us that by the turn of the century we would be wearing supercomputers on our wrists, robots would make everything and only a very few specialists would actually be employed. Everyone else would be paid for doing nothing while the machines did all the work. I don't see much sign of it happening anytime soon
Nick.

That's true SS, although i dont know the 70's i do remeber in the late 80's and early 90's that by now we should be flying in cars rather than driving, and again it is predicted that this will happen in the next 50 years but somehow i wont believe it.
As for future apps what more could you add to a word processor.
Oh, i cant wait for Windows 2020 Second Edition SP20

Windows 2020 - you mean the one that needs 4 Exabytes of disk space for a minimal install and needs 8 Terabytes of RAM and at least a Pentium 57 running at 43 THz? Yes, that 's looking to be a good one, apart from the need for Product Activation every half hour
Nick.

Yeah, youve heard about it too. ..
Only, for product activation you will be required to send Microbot (as it would be known as then) a letter for activation request within 7 days before use, and only after you receive a confirmation of Serial Num usually withing 10-14 working days will you be legally allowed to insert the damn cd and begin install.
But still it will be worth it

I have friends that ask me(being considered somewhat knowledgeable in these matters, {boy are they turning to the wrong place } whether they need a new computer. I askthem this. Does your present computer do the things you want it to do? Does it do them at an acceptable speed?, Does it do them with a minimum of errors and warnings? If the answer is yes, then save your money. The technology ensures that a faster better piece of hardware will certainly be out as soon as your computer arrives at the house, so if you do get a new one don't despair, your new Atlon XP machine will be more fun than your old Pentium II. Also buying a new machine sporting stuff that has slid just a little off the bleeding edge, can give quite a performance boost, and save quite a few bucks to boot.

You wanna keep that 386 of you Tangz, i mean think of the stuff you can do with that, that you cant do with "power machine", like booting up in a cool but also slow way.
I wish i never got rid of my amstrad cpc 464, inserting that cassette and waiting for and hour just to play jaws, ahhh that was fun

Very interesting
This is a really interesting post!
Question for you all though. Maybe they will have all these super-capacity CPU's + HDD, etc. But will we acutally need it?
Apart from those power-freaks out there (no offense) who would need a 30THz CPU and God-knows-how-much HDD space? Short from plugging a lead into the back of ya head for a 'virtual reality' game, most of it would be useless?
Am I right? This is just my opinion.
AMD Duron 945MHz, 20GB, 256RAM, MSI CDRW 48x16x48, Atapi 16x DVD, GeForce 2 MX 400, XP Pro, wish I had more!
