SpinRite 5.0???
i know spinrite wont work on a ntfs disk like windows xp but can i boot into dos and then run it from there, if so how?

No, working only with FAT file systems means you will have to find a different defrag program to deal with NTFS partitions. Booting pure DOS does not help, as DOS needs special third-party drivers to even see NTFS, and Spinrite works at a lower level than these drivers, so they can't enable it to work with NTFS.
