    Question AMD Processor Not Up To Speed

    I have a new ECS K7S5A Motherboard and AMD XP 1700 CPU that is not running up to speed. It says that I am running at about 1100. What do I need to do to get it up to speed.
    Heard at a local auto-repair shop:
    "I couldn't repair your brakes,

    Go into the BIOS and check your Front Side Bus (FSB)... probably running 100, try 133.........

    Yup Abhoth's right on target.

    For the 1700+ the default multiplier = 11 and the FSB = 133.

    100FSB x 11 = 1100MHz (how u have it set now)

    133FSB x 11 = 1463MHz (how it should be set)

    Many new mobo's(bios)will default to that speed when you first boot them up for safety's sake. As the others say,choose manual for the fsb settings and kick it up to par...

    I don't know about ECS boards, but I know that my Epox mobo actually has a jumper that must be moved to have the fsb @ 133. Consult your motherboard manual, it should be an easy fix.

    The ECS board has a jumper too....get your manual out....I don't remember exactly where it is on that board but it was a major PITA

    The K7S5A reportedly will lose its proper FSB setting when the battery starts running low. If this happens by itself for no apparant reason and continues to occur, you may be dealing with that isse.

    I followed the instructions and now it says on startup that processor speed is 1700+. Is it possible to have this speed now?

    Yep it looks like it is working now (the true speed is 1463 megahertz but AMD's marketing trick is to call it a 1700+ because they say it compares to an Intel Pentium 1700mhz chip )

    If you got the one with proper stepping(unlocked)and your mobo's bios supports it, an fsb setting of 12x142 will have it running at 1704Mhz. Have run mine on an Asus A7V 266-E board at that setting for several months now and it's recognized by bios as the 2000+ T-Bred CPU and zips along just fine. With proper HSF,mine runs at 42c to 45c with nada problems...
