Trivial File Protocol / Remote Protocol Call.

    Hi,

Starting to day I have seen several alerts from my Firewall - first concerning something called Trivial File Protocol which was trying to access the Internet. The next was for ATW Protocol.

I have had this, my second system for about 14 days and in that time have been able to get online without any problems (via a Broadband 512k Connection.) However from today within 60 seconds of going online I get a dialog box stating Remote Protocol Call was terminated unexpectedly - then after a timed 60 second interval Win XP closes and reboots. Only for the same thing to recur when I go online.

Can anyone shed any light on what may have happened to cause this ? And on what I can do to rectify it ?

    My System Specs :

    Athlon 2600.
    Gigabyte GN 7 400 Mobo.
    80 GB Hard Disk.
    Samsung352B Combo Optical Drive.
    GF4 Graphics Card.

    WinXP(SP1.) Preinstalled on hidden partition.

    Things I have tried :

    Using System Restore.

Searched Google for any info relating to the above messages - and got results for all - As a result I found the recent RPC Exploit Patch and installed / rebooted. No help got same error again.

Online Trojan Scan (via a hastily installed AOL Free Month ) For some reason the two I tried just would not go beyond 'assessing your setup' ... poss. because of the slowness of 56k.

Offline Trojan Scan with program from Wilders.org.
Scanned whole of C Drive - Nothing found.

Full Virus Scan with AVG (with latest updates.)

Ran Hijack This ( Nothing at first sight here - Though I do know how to generate and copy / paste the logfile if that would be helpful - and if its within Board Rules to do that on VDr.)

On my other system (Win98) I have in the past used the Repair IE function - but don't know how to do that in XP as IE is not in my Add / Remove Progs list.

Sorry to post at such length I merely wanted to cover everything so that anyone reading knows exactly what is wrong and what I have attempted to correct it.

Any assistance would be most welcome.

We've been getting RPC problem reports all day. The patches that seem to work with most people are:

Just for reference if any users get the same error in the future this problem has so far not reappeared after running Fix 823990 (see link in post by DuaneB). The other fix also installed first did not prevent the error recurring subsequently.

    Thanks DuaneB and Supersparks.

Thanks for the feedback. It's good to know what works and what doesn't.
