    XP forgetting folder view setting

    Greetings!

    Re Win XP Pro

I'm having trouble getting Control Panel (Icons), Windows Explorer(Details) to retain last settings. I know I can set 'NoSaveSettings' to 0 (false) in the registry but that doesn't allow for any change flexibility at all without having to reset to 1 (true). I have "Remember each folder's view settings" checked in Tools-Folder Options-View but it does not retain the setting for some reason. How do I get Win XP to retain the settings?

    Thanks,

    Janusz

    Hi:

    Please take no offense:

if you are running a non-store bought copy of XP, someone found if they reset all settings on reboot, the 14 days until manditory activation is disabled. it also disabled user settings.

if store bought XP is used, stay tuned...while they blast me, they will have a real answer.

Hi Are you logged on as administrator? For folder settings this may be applicable. In Windows XP, you can set the view setting of all the folders on a computer to match the view setting of the current (selected) folder by clicking Folder Options on the Tools menu in Windows Explorer and then clicking Like Current Folder on the View tab. However, if a folder other than the current folder is also open when you set the option, Windows XP may not apply the view setting of the current folder to the other open folder.

Use task manager to quit all instances of Windows Explorer, and then restart Windows Explorer so that only one instance of Windows Explorer is running.(end process, new task under applications then explorer.exe)
Make the necessary changes to the view setting.
Click Folder Options on the Tools menu, and then click Like Current Folder on the View tab.
Quit Windows Explorer, and then start Windows Explorer again.

    Thanks for the suggestions!!

Someone sent me this and it was the magic trick that solve the problem:

This should make XP keep folder settings . . .

Increase Cache for Customized Folders (Windows XP)
Windows XP normally remembers the customized settings of a maximum of 400 folders. This tweak allows you to increase the number of folders that can be individually customized.

Create a new DWORD value called "BagMRU Size" and set it to the number of folders that Windows should save settings for (e.g. 1000).

Repeat the step for the same value at {HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam].

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

    Registry Settings
    User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
    Value Name: BagMRU Size
    Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: Default = 400 folders; set Value Data=1000 folders

Works! I'm still trying to get used to XP!

Tweak Ui also has a spot where you can delta the customized folders number that is allowed. I think a thousand is a good place to start. 400 is quite tight if you have much folder action.

janusz, is that two registry entries that have to be changed? Your post is not very clear on this.
